‘We Were Liars’ Renewed for Season 2!!

Straight from the shores of Beechwood Islands, today Prime Video has announced that it’s picked up We Were Liars for a second season. Fans can finally take a deep sigh of relief in knowing that there are plenty more stories to come from the pages of E. Lockhart’s best-selling novel series, as the title’s developers, Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie, return to their posts of bringing the tales from book to screen. While it isn’t immediately clear what audiences can expect from the next batch of episodes, Lockhart has two other novels to base the story around. One, a prequel, is titled Family of Liars, and the other, a sequel to We Were Liars, is titled We Fell Apart and is slated for an arrival to shelves in November.

Though we don’t know which direction Plec and MacKenzie will take things, Lockhart has placed her full trust in them, revealing in a statement tied to the Season 2 renewal:

“MacKenzie and Plec have big, big plans for Season Two, including everything readers of my books are dying to see onscreen — and a lot of surprises as well.”

Likewise, Plec and Mackenzie are beyond excited to bring audiences back to the ever-changing tides and tales of the Sinclair family, adding,

“We loved making this show with so many spectacular humans. The fan response was truly special. There are still plenty of secrets buried on Beechwood Island and we can’t wait to keep digging them up.”

Considering how the first season came to an end (don’t worry, we won’t spoil it for you), it’s unclear which stars will be returning for the follow-up set of episodes. Featuring a sprawling cast of incredibly talented performers, Season 1 starred Emily Alyn Lind (Doctor Sleep), Esther McGregor (Babygirl), Joseph Zada (The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping), Shubham Maheshwari (Haven Dust), Rahul Kohli (The Haunting of Bly Manor), Caitlin FitzGerald (Masters of Sex), Mamie Gummer (The Good Wife), David Morse (Disturbia) and Candice King (The Vampire Diaries).

Prime Video’s Latest Teen Hit

This summer saw Prime Video strike gold not only with We Were Liars, but also other teen dramas like the third and final season of The Summer I Turned Pretty. Given the immense success that We Were Liars enjoyed during its time on the platform, its renewal shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.

Excited for what lies ahead, Erin Underhill, President of Universal Television said:

“The season two renewal of We Were Liars is yet another testament to Julie and this cast and crew’s extraordinary talent. This series, which Julie and Carina crafted so beautifully from E. Lockhart’s beloved books, absolutely deserves a deeper dive. And we’re grateful to Amazon MGM for their collaboration and partnership.”

With so much more story to tell, it seems like everyone, including Laura Lancaster, the Head of Co-Production and Ongoing Series for Amazon Studios and MGM Studios, are eager to see where the story twists and turns from here.

Sharing her glee for the renewal, Lancaster said,

“Delving deeper into the thrilling world of E. Lockhart’s novels with a second season of We Were Liars was a no-brainer. Along with our talented cast, showrunners Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie did a marvelous job bringing the novels to life for our global Prime Video customers, and we can’t wait to see what they have in store for Season Two.”
