It’s time to start the music; it’s time to light the lights. It’s time to meet the Muppets on The Muppet Show tonight…again! Jim Henson‘s venerable gang of creations is coming back in a new special reviving their popular variety show. And they won’t be alone: pop super-sensation Sabrina Carpenter is their special guest host. According to reports, Seth Rogen and his Point Grey Productions shingle are reviving the series as a special for the Disney+ streaming service.
Although it is being produced as a one-off, the hope is that it will serve as a stealth pilot for an ongoing revival of the series, which saw a different celebrity guest engage in antics with the Muppets every week. The special will debut on the streaming service in 2026, which will mark the 50th anniversary of The Muppet Show‘s premiere in 1976. As one of the hottest acts on the current pop charts, Carpenter is a big get for the special. The onetime Disney Channel star released her sixth studio album, Short n’ Sweet, last year; it spawned the global hit singles “Espresso” and “Please Please Please.” Her follow-up album, Man’s Best Friend, was released last month, and debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts.
What Is ‘The Muppet Show’?
The creations of Henson and his intrepid crew of puppeteers, the Muppets made their debut in the world of advertising before populating Sesame Street in the 1960s. Henson wanted to spin the puppets off into their own series, but was rejected by every American network before finding a backer in British media mogul Lew Grade. Grade‘s gamble paid off, and The Muppet Show became a global hit, running for five seasons. It loosely centers around the behind-the-scenes chaos as Kermit (Henson) attempts to keep the show going, with the help (and hindrance) of his fellow Muppets, including Miss Piggy (Frank Oz), Gonzo (Dave Goelz), and Fozzy Bear (Oz). The series went off the air in 1981, but lives on in reruns and currently streams on Disney+. It also spawned a popular series of films, starting with The Muppet Movie. In recent years, the Muppets, now owned by Disney, have appeared in the films The Muppets and Muppets Most Wanted, the TV special Muppets Haunted Mansion, and the miniseries The Muppets Mayhem, centering around Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem band.
The revival of The Muppet Show will be executive produced by Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, and Alex McAtee for Point Grey Pictures, and by David Lightbody, Leigh Slaughter, and Michael Steinbach for The Muppets Studio. The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon writer Albertina Rizzo (no relation to Rizzo the Rat) will write and executive produce; Alex Timbers will direct and executive produce. Muppet mainstays Matt Vogel and Eric Jacobson will also executive produce.
The Muppet Show will return as a Disney+ special in 2026.
