In the last few years, few shows have experienced a resurgence at the same level as Dexter, which blew up on Netflix a few years ago, prompting the greenlighting of several new spin-offs. After Dexter: New Blood was cancelled after only one season, the franchise officially returned in 2024 for the prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin, starring Patrick Gibson as a young Dexter Morgan — Gibson also starred as James Bond earlier this year in 007 First Light. Paramount originally picked up the show for Season 2 before later going back on its word and deciding that it would not return for a second season; a decision that didn’t sit well with passionate Dexter fans. There are still other Dexter projects in the works to be excited about, though, even if Original Sin isn’t moving forward with another season.
The only Dexter show still left standing after various cancellations in the last few years is Dexter: Resurrection, which is coincidentally also the only Dexter show to see Michael C. Hall return to the role in live-action. The first season of Dexter: Resurrection dropped in the first half of last year, and while it took Paramount some time to deliberate, the show was ultimately renewed for Season 2. Before Dexter: Resurrection returns next month for Season 2 on October 30, EW recently released a new batch of images from the next season, showing the first look at welcoming star Dan Stevens. This is the ultimate Dexter x RoboCop crossover, as Stevens has been tapped to play Alex Murphy in Prime Video’s RoboCop reboot series that’s now in the early stages of development. Gabriel Luna from The Last of Us will also star in Season 2.
What Is ‘Dexter: Resurrection’ About?
Paramount’s official synopsis for Dexter: Resurrection, which holds strong scores of 95% from critics and 90% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, reads as follows: “Weeks after taking a bullet to the chest from his own son, Dexter Morgan awakens from a coma to find Harrison gone. Realizing the weight of what he put his son through, Dexter sets out for New York City, determined to find him and make things right. But when Miami Metro’s Angel Batista arrives with questions, Dexter realizes his past is catching up to him fast. As father and son navigate their own darkness, they soon find themselves deeper than ever imagined.” The show is a direct continuation of Dexter: New Blood. There was also going to be another Dexter spin-off centered around a young version of John Lithgow’s Trinity Killer, but it, too, has been scrapped.
