A new feature documentary is exploring the tragic shooting on the set of Rust and the intense legal saga that followed.
Along with an official trailer, new promotional images and a poster for the upcoming documentary, titled The Trial of Alec Baldwin, have been released ahead of its theatrical debut.
The official synopsis reads, “On October 21, 2021, cinematographer Halyna Hutchins is killed on a movie set by a prop gun held by the actor Alec Baldwin. In the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, virtually no one doubts that it was an accident and a deeply traumatizing experience for everyone involved. After the shock subsides, questions of responsibility, guilt, blame, punishment, and justice begin circulating in the media, fueled largely by Baldwin’s fame, as well as his reputation.”
“Talented and adored, yet also flawed, politically outspoken, and prone to explosions of anger, the NYC-based Hollywood star becomes a lightning rod for online haters and a target for pushy paparazzi. With prosecutors weighing criminal charges, the events that unfold are driven less by the facts surrounding the case and more by who Alec Baldwin is — both as a man and as a public figure,” the synopsis continues.

Rory Kennedy examines the tragedy at the center of The Trial of Alec Baldwin
The documentary is directed by Rory Kennedy, best known for Last Days in Vietnam, American Hollow, and Ethel. It explores the public scrutiny and courtroom discussions following a tragic incident on the set of the movie, Rust.
During the filming, Baldwin, who starred in the movie, accidentally fired a prop gun loaded with real lead bullets instead of dummies. This resulted in the death of the Ukrainian cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, who passed away on set. According to reports, the bullet hit Hutchins’ chest and passed through her body, also injuring Joel Souza, the director of the movie.
A new poster for The Trial of Alec Baldwin has also been released.
It is written by Mark Bailey and Julia Marchesi. Kennedy, Bailey, and Marchesi also served as producers. Executive producers include Jared Underwood, Andrew C. Robinson, Colin Marshall, Todd Thompson, Rita Powers, Tanner Cusumano, Rob Guillermo, Ray Maiello, Louis Krubich, Dan Fried, Randy Jones Toll, and Steven Toll.
The Trial of Alec Baldwin opens in New York theaters on October 1, 2026, before expanding to a wider theatrical release on October 16, 2026.
