‘Dexter’: Paramount Has Reportedly Axed Planned ‘The Trinity Killer’ Spin-Off Series!!

Only a few weeks removed from Paramount shutting down the highly anticipated second season ofDexter: Original Sin, the fate of another spin-off in the Dexter universe has seemingly been decided. Following the streaming resurgence of Dexter in the last few years on Netflix, Paramount moved forward with both a prequel and a sequel, Original Sin and Resurrection. There were also reports of another spin-off based on John Lithgow’s Trinity Killer, who is well-regarded as the best villain in the franchise. Unfortunately, it seems this project is no longer moving forward as Paramount shifts its focus to another show.

Dexter creator Clyde Phillips recently sat down for an interview on the Dissecting Dexter Podcast, where he was asked about the status of Lithgow’s Trinity Killer spin-off. Philips admits that he doesn’t “think Paramount is going to go for it.” The reason Paramount is no longer pursuing a Trinity spin-off? According to Phillips, “I think they’re just interested in Resurrection. The Trinity-focused series was reportedly going to bring back Lithgow to voice the character, but cast a younger actor to portray his physical appearance. Dexter: Original Sin followed this same model, and we saw how pleased Paramount was with that.

It’s entirely possible that Paramount realized it was oversaturating the market a bit when it comes to Dexter content. It’s hard enough to recapture the magic of a beloved series, something that the recent Suits reboot failed to do after being canceled after one season. Three Dexter spin-offs were likely never going to allow for any of them to fully shine; now that Paramount is honing in on Resurrection, it will likely give the studio and creatives the most time and resources to make sure Michael C. Hall’s return is handled well going forward.

Has ‘Dexter: Resurrection’ Been Renewed?

Dexter: Resurrection has not yet been officially renewed for a second season at the time of writing, but all signs point to the show getting another chance. In the same report detailing the cancellation of Original Sin, there was news that Paramount had already opened a writer’s room for Dexter: Resurrection Season 2. As long as Clyde Phillips and his team of writers can nail down a good story with strong scripts and there are no major scheduling conflicts, the second season of Dexter: Resurrection could come as early as next year.
