Over a decade ago, Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro announced his intentions to adapt H.P. Lovecraft’s horror novella At the Mountains of Madness for Universal Pictures with James Cameron producing. This was on July 28, 2010, with many hoping that the project would come to fruition. Unfortunately, that never happened, as in the following years, the production was stuck in development hell with no concrete details revealed. That’s about to change as del Toro has finally opened up about the production, revealing if there’s still hope —or not.
In a recent interview centred on his upcoming Frankenstein adaptation, the brilliant director noted that the Netflix film and his previous animated movie, Pinocchio, were two films from his “all-time bucket list.” Among that list is also his adaptation of At the Mountains of Madness, which is the only project still on it. However, del Toro believes that the movie will most likely never see the light of day, as he said:
“The one that’s on the bucket list that I think is gonna stay there is Mountains. It’s too big, too crazy, too R-rated, I guess. And to be completely candid, I don’t know that I want to do it after this.”
Del Toro had his reasons for the disappointing news, admitting that after analyzing himself as an artist, he realized he had to put At the Mountains of Madness aside. He also explained, “This film closes the cycle. If you look at the lineage, from Cronos to The Devil’s Backbone, to Pan’s Labyrinth, to Crimson Peak, to [Frankenstein], this is an evolution of a certain type of aesthetic, and a certain type of rhythm, and a certain type of empathy. I feel like I need a change.”
