HBO has officially unveiled the first trailer for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms during its panel at New York Comic Con, offering a fresh glimpse into Westeros’ next great saga. The Game of Thrones prequel—set nearly a century before Ned Stark ever sat in Winterfell’s halls—centers on Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey) and his unlikely squire, Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell), long before the boy’s secret Targaryen identity changes the future of the realm forever.
The new series adapts George R.R. Martin’s beloved novella The Hedge Knight, the first of three stories from his Tales of Dunk and Egg collection. The trailer teases Dunk’s humble beginnings as a hedge knight, his friendship with the mysterious young Egg, and their arrival at the tourney at Ashford Meadow, where they’ll find themselves entangled with powerful houses and dangerous secrets—including the politics of the Targaryens.
Among the biggest reveals is the return of House Tyrell, marking their first major appearance in the Game of Thrones universe since Season 7’s tragic fallout. Actor Steve Wall joins the cast as Lord Leo “Longthorn” Tyrell, a celebrated warrior and veteran of the First Blackfyre Rebellion, who leads the Reach’s banners in defense of the Iron Throne. Known in Martin’s stories for his chivalry and skill in battle, Leo Tyrell is shown in the trailer as a proud knight preparing to face Dunk in the Ashford lists—his armor emblazoned with the golden rose of Highgarden.
What Does George R. R. Martin Think of ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’?
Martin spoke with Collider earlier this year, and revealed his excitement at the series to come: “I’ve seen Dunk and Egg, the first season, and it’s great,” Martin praised, “and now they’re working on the second season. Those are two characters were really special to me, and they’re unusual, those characters. They’re not what most people would expect in a fantasy story.”
For those hoping for more epic, massive battles or dragons clashing in the sky, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be a sharp change from what we’ve come to expect from this franchise. “It’s a little softer. It’s a little more humorous. I hope the audience will be open to that kind of change,” Martin said. As for the future of Westeros? Well, the more successful this is, the less likely The Winds of Winter becomes… let’s hope fans get what they want.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms premieres on HBO and Max in January 2026.
