Fans can never get enough of Spider-Man. While Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man, starring Tobey Maguire, started the web-slinger’s cinematic journey, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland succeeded him to keep entertaining the general audience. When all three Peter Parkers came together in Holland-led Spider-Man: No Way Home, the movie became a once-in-a-lifetime event, applauded by fans worldwide. With the arrival of the MCU’s multiverse, the hope of seeing Maguire back on the big screen as the OG Peter in Spider-Man 4 has found a new life. The Batman II co-writer, Mattson Tomlin, recently gave a positive update on the possible installment.
“Slow and steady wins the race. There won’t be anything to say about that for a long time (if ever!) because it involves a lot of people and politics and things going right that have nothing to do with me, but I haven’t gotten a “no” yet!”
Why ‘Spider-Man 4’ was Cancelled?
For the uninitiated, Sony owns the rights to Marvel’s Spider-Man character and produced Raimi and Maguire’s Spider-Man trilogy. The first movie, released in 2002, was a massive hit, earning $725.8 million worldwide, and swiftly got a sequel greenlit, which was as good as its predecessor at the box office, earning $675.9 million. It got praise from fans and critics alike and even got an Oscar for Visual Effects.
The success of Spider-Man 2 furthered the studio’s plans for future installments and spin-offs. While the third movie was a box office hit, earning $895.9 million worldwide, it got mixed reviews and came along with behind-the-scenes troubles, so, despite plans for Spider-Man 4, the studio decided to scrap the film and reboot the franchise, which led to Garfield’s two-movie stint. However, the plans of his Amazing Spider-Man trilogy were scrapped after the second movie, and Holland soon after debuted as the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War, starting a new era. In No Way Home, the three Peters came together, giving fans hope for more such crossovers. But since there is no official crossover confirmation, fans will only have to hope for the best.
Meanwhile, Raimi and Maguire’s Spider-Man Trilogy is streaming on Disney+.
