Since exceeding expectations and busting the box office wide open upon its release in 2023, Talk to Me has become one of the most notorious original horror flicks of the last decade. In the two years that have passed, its co-helmers, Michael and Danny Philippou, have delivered audiences another hard-to-watch scare-tastic film with Bring Her Back, and yet fans are still waiting for news surrounding the potential Talk to Me sequel. Given that the project was granted a greenlight in August 2023, shortly after the original was released in the U.S., you might be wondering what the hold-up is all about. Yesterday, news broke that revealed a follow-up is finally on the way — it just won’t resemble what we were expecting.
Moving from the big screen to the small yet all-encompassing screen of a headset, a Talk to Me spin-off series is officially on the way courtesy of Meta and XRTV. If you’ve ever wanted to step directly into the twisted possession-filled world created by the Philippou brothers, this is your chance. The project’s official logline says that it will follow “a group of young travelers chasing the ultimate party on a European island until they discover the Hand, a supernatural high deadlier than any drug.” Those ready to be scared out of their wits will be able to access the 3D six-episode series exclusively from Meta headsets. As per the official announcement, “The live-action series will also harness cutting-edge mixed reality technology to map viewers’ environments and immerse them in the story.”
Neither of the Philippou brothers will be involved in the storytelling of the Talk to Me Meta series, with it instead being penned by Trent Atherton (The Wheel), who pitched the idea alongside Darren Brandl (The Girl in the Woods). The former will write all six installments of the immersive experience, with Craig William Macneill (Them, Castle Rock), attached to direct.
What About the Feature-Length ‘Talk to Me’ Sequel?
If you’re a Talk to Me fan who feels pushed to the side, fear not, as the sequel is still on the way from the Philippou brothers and A24. When out on the press tour for the Sally Hawkins-led Bring Her Back, the siblings told Bloody Disgusting that there were plenty of ideas being tossed around for the plot of the sequel, revealing,
“We have two versions of the script for Talk to Me 2 that are focusing on two different sets of characters that are in two different places. I’m equally excited about both. There’s one scene in one of them that I think will be one of the best things I ever shoot.”
