The frontier just got a lot more dangerous, as Netflix has finally unveiled the first trailer for The Abandons, the upcoming Western drama led by Lena Headey (Game of Thrones) and Gillian Anderson (The X-Files), and it’s shaping up to be one of the streamer’s most ambitious series of the year. Set in the untamed Washington Territory in 1854, the series pits two powerful women — and their families — against each other in a bloody battle for land, power, and survival.
In The Abandons, Fiona Nolan (Headey) and Constance Van Ness (Anderson) stand on opposite sides of a widening chasm between the haves and have-nots. Fiona, a fierce matriarch raising a family of orphans and drifters, carves out a living on the fringes of a brutal land. Constance, meanwhile, rules over a wealthy, silver-rich dynasty that thrives on privilege and influence. When both women stake their claim to the same patch of land, their feud ignites a war that will change the face of the frontier.
Between two crimes, a hugely devastating secret, and a star-crossed romance, however, the bitter war between the pair of them is made all the more complicated by the many ties that bind. What follows is a war between the haves and have-nots, set in a place justice has not yet reached.
Who Is in ‘The Abandons’?
The trailer also highlights the sprawling ensemble cast. Lucas Till (X-Men: First Class) appears alongside Nick Robinson (Maid), Ryan Hurst (Sons of Anarchy), and Diana Silvers (Booksmart), while the cast also includes Lamar Johnson, Aisling Franciosi, Toby Hemingway, Michael Greyeyes, Clayton Cardenas, Patton Oswalt, and Michiel Huisman, among many others.
Originally created by Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter, The Abandons has been in the works since 2022. Production hit a few snags last year when Sutter exited amid creative and budgetary disputes, but the show’s remaining team — led by director Otto Bathurst (Peaky Blinders) and co-executive producer Rob Askins (The Umbrella Academy) — brought the series across the finish line.
Filmed on location in Calgary, the show looks immense and authentically Western. The scale and scope is immediately apparent in the trailer’s sweeping cinematography and production design. The series’ creative team also includes executive producers Chris Keyser, Stephen Surjik, Emmy Grinwis, and Jon Paré.
Netflix confirmed that The Abandons will premiere globally on December 4, with all eight episodes available at launch.
