‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Sequel Won’t Arrive Before 2029!!

After a successful debut, HUNTR/X is going back on tour…but don’t clear your calendar just yet. Sony and Netflix’s smash hit animated musical, KPop Demon Hunters, is getting a sequel. However, it isn’t expected to hit the streamer until 2029.

According to reports, Sony (which produced the movie) and Netflix (which released it) have come to an agreement on a sequel, which is no surprise after the animated feature burned up the streaming charts upon its release this summer. Since its release in June, the film has accrued 325 million views, making it the most-viewed movie in Netflix history. It’s even had a run in theaters, something Netflix is generally averse to; it’s grossed $24.4 million USD in theaters with both a conventional release and a “sing-along” version. Its soundtrack is climbing the charts as well; the soundtrack album hit #1 on the Billboard charts, as did the single “Golden.” Next up, it’s looking to conquer the toy aisles, as deals have been struck with both Hasbro and Mattel for a line of dolls and action figures.

What Is ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ About?

The film centers around the Korean pop group HUNTR/X, which is composed of Rumi (Arden Cho speaking, Ejae singing), Mira (May Hong speaking, Audrey Nuna singing), and Zoey (Ji-young Yoo speaking, Rei Ami singing). In addition to the stresses of pop stardom, the trio also have double lives as demon hunters, the latest in a centuries-old tradition of musical demon hunters who maintain the Honmoon, a mystical barrier. Rumi is secretly half-demon herself, a fact known only by her trainer and foster mother, Celine (Yunjin Kim). The group has a new rival in the form of the Saja Boys, a boy band who are all secretly demons dispatched by the demon king Gwi-Ma (Lee Byung-hun); unfortunately for Rumi, her demonic side is strengthening, manifesting in the form of patterns on her skin. Can she overcome the darkness growing inside her to join with her bandmates and best her demonic foes?

KPop Demon Hunters was directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans. Kang originally conceived of the film, and wrote it with Appelhans, Danya Jimenez, and Hannah McMechan. It has been enormously popular with both critics and audiences, boasting a 95% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In his review, Collider‘s Jeff Ewing called the film “unmissable,” and praised its cast, music, and visuals.

KPop Demon Hunters 2 will be released in 2029.
