‘John Rambo’: Anthony & Joe Russo to Produce Lionsgate-Millennium’s Prequel!!

It’s time to draw first blood… again. AGBO, the studio founded by longtime MCU directors and upcoming Avengers: Doomsday helmers Anthony and Joe Russo, has announced it is producing John Rambo, a new prequel film exploring the origins of Sylvester Stallone’s legendary character. The project is being developed in partnership with Lionsgate and Millennium Media. Set during the Vietnam War and filming in Thailand, John Rambo will tell the story that turned Rambo into that shellshocked man we met so many years ago. The film will be directed by Jalmari Helander (Sisu) from a screenplay by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani (The Mauritanian, Black Adam). Rising star Noah Centineo (The Recruit) is in final negotiations to take on the title role.

Why Are AGBO Making John Rambo?

Lionsgate, which distributed Rambo: Last Blood in 2019, will handle global distribution and launch international sales at the American Film Market this month. “AGBO’s entire team, led by Anthony and Joe, are creative innovators who are delivering the most emotionally satisfying and inventive action-led storytelling in theaters around the world today,” said Charlotte Koh, Lionsgate’s EVP of Acquisitions and Co-Productions. “Combining our longstanding partnership with Millennium Media with AGBO’s groundbreaking body of work and Jalmari’s singularly visceral directing talent, we are confident that John Rambo will be an event film that is a must-see for action fans.”

Behind the scenes, Angela Russo-Otstot and Michael Disco will produce for AGBO, alongside Kevin King Templeton, Les Weldon, and Jonathan Yunger for Millennium Media. Anthony and Joe Russo will serve as executive producers. For AGBO, John Rambo continues the studio’s tradition of bringing to life some of the most visceral action movies of recent times. The Russos have a proven track record of balancing scale and soul — from Captain America: The Winter Soldier to The Gray Man and Extraction. This time, they face their toughest challenge yet in the form of one of cinema’s most enduring heroes.
