Nearly two decades after it first captivated audiences, Pan’s Labyrinth is returning to the big screen. Cineverse has officially acquired Guillermo del Toro’s three-time Academy Award–winning dark fantasy masterpiece, with plans to re-release the film in theaters for its 20th anniversary in 2026.
Written and directed by del Toro and produced by his company Tequila Gang, Pan’s Labyrinth originally premiered at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival, where it famously received a 22-minute standing ovation — the longest in the festival’s history. The film went on to become one of the most acclaimed movies of the 21st century, earning six Oscar nominations and taking home three wins for Cinematography, Art Direction, and Makeup.
Set in 1944 Spain, in the aftermath of the Civil War, Pan’s Labyrinth tells the haunting story of Ofelia (Ivana Baquero), a young girl who escapes her brutal reality under her fascist stepfather, Captain Vidal (Sergi López), by entering a mysterious labyrinth. There, she meets a Faun (Doug Jones), who claims she is a lost princess from another world. To reclaim her throne, she must complete three dangerous tasks — all while her mother’s health deteriorates and the real world around her descends further into violence. The film also stars Maribel Verdú (Y tu mamá también), Doug Jones (Hellboy II), and Sergi López (Dirty Pretty Things).
Why Is Cineverse Releasing Pan’s Labyrinth?
Cineverse’s acquisition includes North American theatrical, streaming, and home entertainment rights, with plans to present the film in premium large-format screenings. The company also plans to launch original companion content — including podcasts and featurettes — exploring the film’s enduring legacy and del Toro’s creative process. Del Toro expressed his enthusiasm for revisiting the film:
“Pan’s Labyrinth turns 20 years old, and in Cineverse we have found the perfect partner to make it live again on the big screen and in new and improved home presentations. Cineverse is committed and bold, and their track record for reaching a maximum audience is magnificent. Together we will reconnect the generations that have shared the film through the years and long to experience it theatrically again.”
Cineverse Chief Motion Pictures Officer Yolanda Macias added:
“Partnering with Guillermo del Toro and his team around this masterpiece is a dream come true. We can’t wait to bring it back to theaters for fans to enjoy it as they did 20 years ago — and to introduce this amazing cinematic story to new audiences for the first time.”
Cineverse Chairman and CEO Chris McGurk called del Toro “a filmmaking genius,” saying,
“I have always been in awe of his creative vision and could not be more pleased to have Cineverse partnering with him to bring Pan’s Labyrinth back to film audiences in new premium theatrical formats.”
Cineverse will release the restored 20th Anniversary edition of Pan’s Labyrinth in theaters in 2026.
