Thunderbolt and Lightfoot are about to ride again with Ryan Reynolds. The Deadpool & Wolverine star has joined forces with Amazon MGM to develop a remake to the underrated Clint Eastwood and Jeff Bridges crime comedy classic, which he would star in and produce through his Maximum Effort production banner. On top of all that, Reynolds is also working closely with the writing duo Enzo Mileti and Scott Wilson on the script, and he’ll get to reunite with Deadpool & Wolverine editor Shane Reid in what will be Reid‘s directorial debut.
Marking the directorial debut of eventual Best Picture winner Michael Cimino, Thunderbolt and Lightfoot follows Thunderbolt (Eastwood), a formerly legendary thief now posing as a priest to hide from his former crew. Upon crossing paths with the young drifter Lightfoot (Bridges), he teams up with the man for a scheme to recover stolen loot from a past heist with help from said gang that’s out to find Thunderbolt for his perceived betrayal. Pleading his innocence, he wins his old pals back over and they rally together to pull off dangero theus job, robbing the exact same bank they did in the past. Unfortunately, nothing goes as planned for the group, and with volatile former accomplices in tow, things only get worse as they go on the run.
Given the original was a two-hander carried primarily by the relationship between Eastwood and Bridges‘s characters, Reynolds‘s remake is expected to land another high-profile star to play opposite of him. Immediately, the first name that comes to mind is Hugh Jackman, considering his and Reynolds‘ rapport in their much-acclaimed MCU buddy comedy superhero flick. For now, though, the other title role remains wide open. Mileti and Wilson may be the perfect duo to take on such a remake considering their past work writing episodes of and producing Season 4 of FX‘s darkly comedic crime series Fargo. The duo have also previously joined forces on the Showtime series Black Monday and another underrated FX hit in Snowfall.
Reynolds Continues to Be One of Hollywood’s Busiest Actors
Thunderbolt and Lightfoot would be just the latest in an eye-watering list of projects Reynolds has been attached to. Earlier this week, he was officially cast in Amy Sherman-Palladino‘s adaptation of Eloise at Netflix, playing “an original villainous character” for the high-profile project. He and Colin Hanks also recently debuted their much-acclaimed and long-gestating documentary John Candy: I Like Me about the beloved late Planes, Trains and Automobiles star. Those just barely scratch the surface of what he’s involved in, as he’s also due for an action-packed team-up with Kenneth Branagh for Mayday from Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves helmers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, a Netflix-bound adaptation of the classic video game Dragon’s Lair, and an R-rated animal comedy in Animal Friends alongside Jason Momoa. More than likely, his time in the MCU is far from done too, after Deadpool & Wolverine thrived to the tune of over $1.33 billion.
