Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda, the dynamic duo behind the Emmy-nominated mockumentary American Vandal, are heading to Metropolis for a brand new adventure. As per THR, the pair will write, executive produce, and serve as showrunners on a new Superman TV spinoff for DC Studios — this time starring Skyler Gisondo as Daily Planet photographer Jimmy Olsen. Neato!
Gisondo’s charming take on Jimmy Olsen became a breakout fan favorite from James Gunn’s summer blockbuster, and the new series will shift focus away from Clark Kent and Lois Lane, instead following Jimmy and his Daily Planet colleagues as they investigate stories involving super-powered villains.
This isn’t your typical newsroom drama, though. Season 1 will reportedly spotlight Gorilla Grodd, the telepathic, hyper-intelligent ape who rules the hidden African metropolis known as Gorilla City. A classic DC villain first introduced in The Flash comics in 1959 by John Broome and Carmine Infantino, Grodd’s inclusion hints that the show will blend newsroom intrigue with full-on comic-book absurdity — exactly the kind of tonal mashup Perrault and Yacenda excel at. The series is being produced under DC Studios, with Gunn and his co-chair Peter Safran serving as executive producers. Galen Vaisman will oversee development for DC.
Was ‘Superman’ Worth Seeing?
For sure, the movie brought a new take on the Man of Steel to audiences — and a much more optimistic one, at that. Gisondo was a standout in the movie alongside David Corenswet as Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Collider’s review of the movie praised Gunn for giving the character the “glow up” he deserved in 2025, adding:
Superman is a magnificent feat, a film that makes the Man of Steel fascinating in a way we’ve rarely seen on film, with a take on the hero that is trenchant, clever, and delightful. Gunn is paying tribute to the past while also making a very clear mark on this world’s future, crafting an introduction to the DCU that inherently makes the viewer want to know where this world goes from here. At this point, it’s rare for superhero films to give a sense of wonder and a reminder of how beautiful these films can be when executed well. But Gunn has brought optimism, hope, and care back to Superman. It ends up becoming one of the best DC films in years, and one of the best movies of the summer. This universe could be great, and Gunn has the light to show the way for where the DCU could go.
