For the first time in fifteen years, the Stargate is reopening. The classic science fiction franchise that spawned a hit movie and three TV series is coming back to the small screen in the form of a new series on Prime Video. There’s no indication yet whether the new series, simply titled Stargate, will continue the series’ prior continuity or go off in a new direction. However, there is a Stargate veteran at the helm. Blindspot creator Martin Gero, whose first big television job was as story editor for Stargate Atlantis and worked on both Stargate: SG-1 and Stargate Universe, will create and executive-produce the new series.
In a statement, Gero credited Stargate for his career, saying, “…Stargate taught me everything about making television — it’s written into my DNA.” He credited the show’s avid fanbase with keeping the franchise alive in the fifteen years since Universe‘s cancellation, but promised that newcomers would find something to enjoy in the new series, as well:
“For those who’ve kept the gate active through conventions, rewatches, and unwavering faith — this one’s for you. And for those that are new to our world — I promise you’re in for something extraordinary.”
What Is ‘Stargate’ About?
Stargate hit theaters in 1994; directed by Roland Emmerich, who also co-wrote its script with Dean Devlin, it told the story of a secret military project to activate a mysterious ancient device found buried in the Egyptian desert. The device turns out to be the titular stargate, an alien machine that can create a portal to another world. A team, commanded by Colonel Jack O’Neil (Kurt Russell) and Egyptologist Daniel Jackson (James Spader), is sent through the stargate to the desert planet Abydos, where humans are ruled over by the alien Goa’uld and their leader Ra (Jaye Davidson, The Crying Game).
Despite mixed reviews, the movie was a hit, grossing $196 million USD on a $55 million budget. A spin-off TV series, with McGyver‘s Richard Dean Anderson as O’Neil and Canadian actor Michael Shanks (not to be confused with the Australian director behind Together) as Jackson, continued the story of the movie, and ran for ten seasons. SG-1 spun off Stargate Atlantis, about a team exploring the fabled lost city of the title, and Stargate Universe, which chronicled the exploits of a squad stranded billions of light-years from Earth; they lasted five and two seasons, respectively.
The new Stargate series will be executive produced by Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell for Safehouse Pictures, as well as original Stargate creators Devlin and Emmerich. Stargate veterans Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi will serve as consulting producers.
