The fate of HBO‘s critically acclaimed new crime thriller series has been decided after the Season 1 finale. HBO has announced that Task has been renewed for Season 2 after it became one of the streamer’s top three fastest-growing new shows ever. HBO did not include any returning cast members in the renewal announcement, but it’s heavily speculated that Mark Ruffalo will return in Season 2. Task Season 1 follows an FBI agent (Ruffalo) who heads up a task force to put an end to a string of violent robberies led by an unsuspecting family man, portrayed by Tom Pelphrey.
Task was written and created for TV by Brad Ingelsby, who famously worked with HBO before on another hit series, Mare of Easttown. Ingelsby shared a statement on Task’s renewal, saying, “We’ve been incredibly fortunate to have HBO’s unwavering support of TASK from the very first script onwards, throughout production, and during their extraordinary launch of our first season to audiences. They are an unmatched creative home. On behalf of the entire TASK team, in front of and behind the camera, I am honored and excited to get back to work on a second season of our show.”
Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President of HBO Programming and Head of HBO Drama Series and Films, also shared some words on Task’s renewal: “We knew well in advance of its launch that we had a powerful drama series on our hands, but it has been so rewarding to witness the audience’s fervor and embrace of this show as it grew week after week. Rarely does a writer balance humanistic storytelling with intricate, explosive plotting, but Brad Ingelsby is one of our industry’s greats, and we have no doubt he will strike as profoundly and addictively once again in Season 2.”
When Does ‘Task’ Season 2 Come Out?
HBO didn’t announce any details about Task Season 2, such as when it plans to begin production or any potential release window. It’s unclear how much of Season 2 Ingelsby has already written, but if he can get the scripts done before the end of the year, production could kick off as early as 2026. It shouldn’t be any later than early 2027 before Season 2 of Task is back streaming on HBO Max.
