Many Star Wars fans may have expected a look at the Knights of the Old Republic remake at The Game Awards tonight, but Lucasfilm Games just gave us one better. A brand-new game set in the fan-favorite Star Wars era is officially in the works, title Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic. The news itself is shocking enough, but we also have a stunning new trailer that teases what’s in store.
The trailer isn’t actual gameplay, but it has a young Jedi and her two companions exploring a frozen planet before facing a deadly new creature. After that title card though, the possibilities are endless, as this will presumably be the first new project from Disney and Lucasfilm in the new canon. Not only that, but the new game is also being overseen by Casey Hudson — the director of the original beloved Knights of the Old Republic game. Just like that game, Fate of the Old Republic is being pitched as a proper RPG. The official description reads as follows:
“In this narrative-driven, single player RPG and spiritual successor to Knights of the Old Republic, players step into the role of a Force user in a galaxy on the edge of rebirth. Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic will blend innovative storytelling, memorable characters, and heart-pounding combat for an unforgettable experience where every decision deepens the player’s journey toward light or darkness.”
Is the ‘Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic’ Remake Still Coming Out?
In addition to this being the first new story set in the Old Republic era post-Disney, it will be the first game set in said era in over 14 years, the last being the 2011 MMO spin-off simply titled Star Wars: The Old Republic. It’s a truly pleasant surprise to return to a time when the Jedi and the Sith were engaged in all out war, but it does raise questions about the previously announced remake of Knights of the Old Republic. Rumors have circled about the game’s troubled development, despite assurances it is still in the works. This also doesn’t even account for the High Republic-set Star Wars: Eclipse, which was announced a previous Game Awards from 4 years ago and has had few updates since. Either way, the promise of a return to this beloved part of A Galaxy Far, Far Away is a dream come true for fans.
Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic does not currently have a release date.
