After what seems like weeks of build-up, Timothée Chalamet‘s performance in Marty Supreme is out there for the world (or at least six theaters in Los Angeles and New York) to see. The proof of the pre-release buzz is in the pudding, with the sports drama breaking multiple records in its debut weekend. Marty Supreme secured a spot on the domestic top 10 charts despite playing in roughly 3,784 fewer locations than the weekend’s number one movie, Avatar: Fire and Ash. It also set a new record for distributor A24, as it prepares to expand nationwide in a few days. The movie is being touted as a hot favorite to score several Oscar nods in a few weeks, with Chalamet going on the record to declare that this time, he wants to win. He was previously up for Best Actor just last year, for his performance in the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown.
Marty Supreme grossed around $875,000 from just six theaters this past weekend, selling out nearly 100 shows. It delivered a per-theater average of $145,000 — the best of the year, ahead of Wes Anderson‘s The Phoenician Scheme, and among the best ever for a platform release. This is also the best per-theater average for A24, and the best for a comparable title since 2016’s La La Land, which went on to gross over $500 million at the global box office. With the best pre-sale figures in A24 history, the movie is achieving what few Oscar contenders can — relevance among the youth. Chalamet has been on a marketing overdrive, and now, all eyes are set on the movie’s wide expansion on Christmas Day.
‘Marty Supreme’ Is One of the Best-Reviewed Films of the Year
Marty Supreme is directed by Josh Safdie, whose brother, Benny Safdie, directed his own A24 movie some weeks ago. Benny‘s The Smashing Machine tanked at the box office, grossing just $20 million worldwide against a reported budget of $50 million. With a reported price tag of $70 million, Marty Supreme is the most expensive A24 release yet. The movie opened to excellent reviews and is currently sitting at a “certified fresh” 95% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads, “Serving up Timothée Chalamet at his most infectiously charismatic, Marty Supreme is a propulsive epic that realizes its sky-high aspirations even while it critiques its indelible hero’s toxic ambition.”
Also starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Odessa A’zion, Marty Supreme is still playing in limited release, but will expand in a few days.
