‘The Housemaid’s Secret’: Sydney Sweeney’s Twisty Erotic Thriller ‘The Housemaid’ Is Getting a Sequel!!

After cleaning up at the box office this holiday season, The Housemaid is coming back. The Housemaid’s Secret, an adaptation of the next book in Freida McFadden’s best-selling thriller series, is set to begin production later this year. Star Sydney Sweeney will return to executive produce, and is being courted to reprise her role as Millie Halloway, the title character.

After taking in $133 million on a modest $35 million budget over the Christmas movie-going season, it’s no surprise that a sequel to the erotic thriller is in the works. Sweeney is set to return, with many of the first film’s creatives slated to come back for another helping. That includes screenwriter Rebecca Sonnenshine (The Vampire Diaries), and producers Todd Lieberman of Hidden Pictures, Paul Feig (A Simple Favor) and Laura Fischer of Feig’s Pretty Dangerous Pictures, and executive producers McFadden and Hidden PicturesCarly Elter and Alex Young. It’s not clear yet if Feig will return to the director’s chair for this installment, as well. The Housemaid’s Secret is the second book in a trilogy, so don’t be surprised if a threequel based on The Housemaid Is Watching surfaces in the near future, as well.

What Is ‘The Housemaid’ About?

Sweeney stars as Millie Halloway, a recently paroled young woman hired as a housemaid by the wealthy Winchester family. It quickly becomes clear that all is not well with the seemingly picture-perfect Winchesters: Nina (Amanda Seyfried, The Testament of Ann Lee) is seemingly on the edge of sanity, and previously attempted to kill herself and her daughter, while husband Andrew (Brandon Sklenar, 1923) seems a little too interested in Millie. Meanwhile, Millie’s stuck living in the attic in a room that locks from the outside. However, the Winchesters aren’t the only ones with secrets…

The Housemaid reversed a trend for Sweeney, who had notable box office flops this year in the form of the historical survival thriller Eden and the boxing biopic Christy. Next year, she’s set to return to her star-making role of the troubled Cassie Howard in the long-awaited third season of Euphoria, and is attached to a number of upcoming projects, including a live-action Gundam film, an adaptation of the video game Split Fiction, and Scandalous!, in which she will play Kim Novak opposite David Jonsson‘s Sammy Davis Jr.

The Housemaid’s Secret, a sequel to The Housemaid, is set to begin production later this year.
