‘Bear Country’: Russell Crowe Reveals First Poster of His New Collaboration with ‘Unhinged’ Director!! Check It Out!!

Oscar winner and lovable bear-in-human-form Russell Crowe is officially back in crime-thriller mode. A striking first look at Bear Country has dropped, revealing Crowe as Manco Kapak — an aging but dangerous nightclub owner whose plans for a quiet exit from the underworld go up in smoke. The film marks Crowe’s first time shooting in Queensland since the highly underrated Land of Bad in late 2022, with production returning him to Australia for the adaptation of Strip, Thomas Perry’s 2010 crime novel. The screenplay comes from Daniel Forte and Derrick Borte, who also directs after his nerve-shredding hit Unhinged.

The Bear Country poster is… quite demented, if we’re being honest. And that’s a good thing. Front and center is Crowe himself, seated cross-legged in a meditation pose on a sleek poolside patio, eyes closed and hands resting calmly on his knees. He’s dressed in a retro, burnt-orange tracksuit and oversized headphones, projecting an almost comical sense of serenity. That calm, however, is undercut by what’s placed directly in front of him: a handgun and loose bullets lying on the ground. Fun.

What Is ‘Bear Country’ About?

Bear Country centers on Manco, a longtime club boss ready to sell out and disappear with his girlfriend — until a masked robbery detonates everything. Furious, Manco unleashes his security team on a suspect he believes is an outsider foolish enough to rob a gangster. What he doesn’t realize is that he’s targeting the wrong man, setting off a brutal chain reaction involving dirty cops, cartel pressure, and multiple players who think they’ve found a new line of work robbing Manco Kapak.

Alongside Crowe, Aaron Paul plays Jeff, an unassuming teacher pulled into a corrupt scheme. Daniel Zovatto portrays cartel enforcer Rodriguez, while Luke Evans takes on Joe Carver, an undercover federal agent caught in the crossfire. Nina Dobrev and Teresa Palmer also star in the movie as characters named Carrie and Sunny.

Producers include Jeffery Greenstein (The Hitman’s Bodyguard), Deborah Glover, and Marker Bower and Bruno Mustic of Life and Soul Pictures.

Last year, Crowe headlined Nuremberg as the SS officer Hermann Göring in a historical epic about the Nuremberg Trials, opposite Rami Malek and Michael Shannon. The film premiered to acclaim at the Toronto International Film Festival, earning a long standing ovation, with huge praise going to Crowe‘s powerhouse performance.

Bear Country does not currently have a release date.
