‘Stargate’: Prime Video Reboot Gets Major Update!!

The decades of quality cinematic experience have produced several stories that have expanded into franchises. Marvel has its own thing going with the Avengers and the superhero genre, while the fantasy genre has offered The Lord of the Rings and, more recently, HBO‘s Game of Thrones. Sci-fi has not been left behind, with the Star Wars and Star Trek projects being two of the biggest, most popular franchises ever. The Stargate franchise is yet another sci-fi spectacle. Although not as popular as the aforementioned duo, it still has its own appeal.

Since the classic science fiction franchise was launched with the 1994 film Stargate, things kicked off with its critically acclaimed 1997 sci-fi series, Stargate SG-1. The series went on to last for 10 seasons, and the franchise’s cult following soon ensured that many more spin-offs, all taking place in a universe where portals to other worlds existed, were made. The series was created by Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner and saw Kurt Russell, who starred in the 1994 film, replaced for the series by Richard Dean Anderson as Jack O’Neill. James Spader was the other major absentee from the film and was replaced by Michael Shanks, who played the intelligent Egyptologist, Daniel Jackson.

As previously mentioned, the Stargate franchise has expanded over the years with spin-offs such as Stargate Atlantis, which starred Jason Momoa and Joe Flanigan, Stargate Universe, and Stargate Origins. Animated series like Stargate Infinity, as well as direct-to-DVD films Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Stargate: Continuum, are featured as part of the catalog. Now, nearly three decades later, Stargate is primed to be resurrected once more, and franchise star, Flanigan, while speaking in an interview with Dial the Gate on YouTube, confirmed that a writers’ room for the revival is now in full swing. He said:

Martin Gero called me and he said, ‘Why don’t you drop by the writers room here in LA?’ So I think I’m going to on Wednesday. But there’s a lot of NDAs involved in that. So don’t expect me to be able to give you any information.”

The ‘Stargate’ Franchise Is Headed Into New Terrain

Flanigan is a big deal in the Stargate franchise, having played John Sheppard for all the Atlantis spin-offs. Wheels began to turn towards a revival when it was announced in November 2025 that Amazon MGM Studios was officially greenlighting a revival of the Stargate universe. The series is created by Martin Gero, who was an executive producer on Stargate Atlantis, but specific details remain unknown. However, the project has been described as “a new original series that begins a bold new chapter in the iconic science fiction franchise,” and it will stream exclusively on Prime Video worldwide.
