Video game adaptations have been hit or miss for years now, but there have been a few to come out that surprised everyone. Most have come in the TV form, starting with The Last of Us back in 2023 and continuing with Fallout the next year. Both shows have aired two seasons and have more episodes on the way, and both are hailed as two of the greatest video game adaptations of all time. However, there has been a major movie franchise inspired by a video game to launch in the last few years that’s only getting better with each new release, which is Sonic the Hedgehog. The first movie premiered back in 2020, and while it wasn’t a hit with critics, it did well at the box office and was a smash hit among audiences.
Sonic 2 continued this trend as it began to win over critics, but things fully turned around at the end of 2024 with the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. After already casting Idris Elba as Knuckles in the second film, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 added Keanu Reeves to the famous role of Shadow, and it was game over from there. Paramount has found a winning formula with the Sonic franchise by introducing a new character in each movie, and the fourth Sonic film will continue this trend by introducing Amy Rose. News broke this afternoon that Kristen Bell will even voice the character in the fourth Sonic movie, which is coming to theaters on March 19, 2027. There’s no reason to think this will be delayed either, as production on the film is scheduled to start soon.
Are the Sonic Movies on Streaming?
All the Sonic movies are streaming on Paramount+, but each film has a home on a separate streamer as well. The first Sonic movie can also be streamed for free on Pluto TV, while its 2022 sequel can be watched on Hulu for now. Even the third Sonic film is available to watch on both MGM+ and Prime Video, and all three films consistently rotate homes to give plenty of people the chance to watch, and not just those who are subscribed to Paramount+. James Marsden will also be back in the fourth Sonic film to reprise his human role as Tom, with Ben Schwartz returning as Sonic.
