It’s been over 25 years since one of the greatest fantasy movies of all time. In 1999, Brendan Fraser teamed up with Rachel Weisz for The Mummy, the fantasy sensation that grossed over $415 million at the box office against an $80 million budget. The film was mostly well-liked, earning scores of 63% from critics and 75% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and it did well enough to warrant the green-lighting of a sequel, The Mummy Returns, which also introduced Dwayne Johnson as The Scorpion King. It was one of Johnson’s earliest acting roles after he transitioned from wrestling to acting. One year after The Mummy Returns hit theaters, Johnson even headlined a spin-off movie, The Scorpion King, but the film was panned by critics and audiences alike.
The Mummy franchise didn’t stop with Johnson’s 2002 offshoot, though. Fraser returned to the Mummy franchise in 2008 with the release of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon, the maligned fantasy sequel that also features Jet Li. Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe also teamed up nine years ago for another Mummy movie that’s currently streaming on HBO Max. With the 25th anniversary of The Mummy Returns quickly approaching, Universal has made its most exciting announcement of the year thus far. The Mummy Returns will be back in theaters starting March 27, and it’s expected to last for at least a week. Still, tickets are already going fast, and they can now be purchased here — move quickly, Mummy fans. The Mummy Returns grossed $443 million at the box office during its initial release, and it will now have the chance to pass $450 million from anniversary showings. Universal even released a new trailer to celebrate the announcement.
