The God of Light and Peace has officially been summoned to Prime Video. Ronald D. Moore‘s upcoming God of War series adaptation has tapped Ed Skrein to join its pantheon of Norse gods as Baldur, the main antagonist of the 2018 PlayStation reboot and the likely big bad of Season 1. As one of Odin’s sons with a bloodlust fueled by a curse that has deprived him of any physical sensation, he’s about to be a big problem for Ryan Hurst‘s Kratos and Callum Vinson‘s Atreus. A seasoned villain of Deadpool, Rebel Moon, Game of Thrones, and, most recently, Jurassic World Rebirth fame, he’s set to take the place of Emmy winner Jeremy Davies, who scored a BAFTA Award for his vicious turn in the original game.
Baldur is the Allfather’s youngest son and, in the games, he acts as his most dangerous weapon. In their quest to spread their wife and mother, Faye’s, ashes atop the highest peak in the nine realms, Kratos and his son, Atreus, first cross paths with the Aesir when his search for the Jötunn Guardian brings him to the cabin of the former Greek God of War. A misunderstanding becomes a lasting grudge as, upon realizing he can’t deal with Kratos alone, he enlists his nephews and Thor’s sons, Magni and Modi, to help him take out the Ghost of Sparta, becoming a constant nuisance along their journey. Most of all, Baldur is looking for a strong opponent that can make him actually feel something, though he may get a bit more than he bargained for when tangling with a man who has felled plenty of Gods before him.
Skrein is just the latest addition to a video game adaptation that has been massively heating up of late. Although all indications are that God of War will focus primarily on the 2018 game and the bond between Kratos and Atreus as they teach each other both how to be a better human and a better god, to start, the casting has indicated that viewers will see some of the gods introduced in its 2022 sequel, God of War: Ragnarok, enter the picture a bit earlier. So far, Boots breakout Max Parker is on board as Heimdall, alongside Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Jeff Gulka as Sindri, Danny Woodburn as Brok, and Mandy Patinkin as Odin. Alastair Duncan also reprises his role from the games as Mimir.
When Could ‘God of War’ Begin Production?
A start for filming on God of War has yet to be announced, but the series is inching closer to getting cameras rolling at long last. Pre-production has been underway in Vancouver, though there are still some key roles that have yet to be announced, like the aforementioned Magni and Modi. After years of waiting since the adaptation was first confirmed, though, things are finally on track to bring Kratos’s Norse adventures to life sooner rather than later. The Emmy-winning Battlestar Galactica alum Moore serves as writer, showrunner, and executive producer, with Shōgun director Frederick E.O. Toye on board to helm the first two episodes.
