Guy Ritchie is back on television, only a few months after MobLand wrapped up on Paramount+. This time, he revisits the iconic detective Sherlock Holmes in a reimagination of the famed sleuth’s early life. Young Sherlock premiered on March 4 and, within a few days, became the number one show on Prime Video, a position it has held for the past several days. Naturally, fans who have been enamored by Hero Fiennes Tiffin and Dónal Finn’s portrayal of Holmes and his arch-nemesis James Moriarty want another season. Simon Maxwell is a producer on the series, and in a new interview, he addressed questions about Season 2, revealing some encouraging details.
“We know that in terms of the origin and coming-of-age story, we’ve just told the first stage. It is absolutely designed to be a multi-season show,” Maxwell said in the interview. When the series begins, Holmes and Moriarty are not the enemies they’re known to be; they’re actually best friends. However, Season 1 lays subtle cues for Moriarty’s descent into the dark side. “We want to track the journeys that each of these characters are going to go on… by bringing Sherlock and Moriarty into the same frame, and positioning them as friends, what you’re implicitly promising the audience is that you’re going to show them how they become enemies,” the producer added. Now, all that depends on whether the show gets a second season, but the team is optimistic given the encouraging streaming numbers and the availability of material to adapt. Maxwell revealed the current status of things, saying,
“It’s too early to say that it’s a green light, but we’ve got the core team, and we’re in the early stages of prep, I would say. We’ve all worked together, obviously driven by [creator] Matthew [Parkhill], to build the story for Season 2. The intention is very much for Guy to come back and kick it off again with us.”
Is ‘Young Sherlock’ a Good Show?
Everyone agrees that Young Sherlock is entertaining. Critics and viewers are almost unanimous in their opinion regarding the fresh take on the story. Critics have rated the series 84% on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, while viewers are not far behind with 83%. Given this high score, Young Sherlock’s reception is mostly positive. Collider‘s Therese Lacson reviewed the show and noted that, while it does not reinvent anything or expand the Sherlock Holmes lore, it is pure fun. Lacson wrote in her review of Young Sherlock Season 1:
Though it’s far from the most loyal adaptation, what Young Sherlock lacks in accuracy to the source material, it makes up for in pure entertainment. It’s not fancy or pretentious; it’s just having fun and takes you on the ride with it. By the end of the season, it’s hard not to imagine where the next mystery will lead Sherlock and his friends. The characters have all evolved, and it almost feels like the chessboard is set for a game years down the line, but what’s for sure is that Young Sherlock has a refreshing and unique take on the famous detective, one that breaks with tradition in a way that is determined to keep you on your toes.
