Hacks is coming back to HBO Max for what will be its fifth and final season. Last week, Hannah Einbinder confirmed to Collider that the odd-couple show business comedy will be taking its final bow this spring, and now we finally know when the last season will premiere. We also have our first look at the new season in the form of a riotous new trailer.
In the new trailer, Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) is born to be alive: reports of her death have proved to be premature, and she’s back to resurrect her career. That won’t be so easy, with a non-compete agreement from her eventful stint on late-night TV hanging over her head, but with the help of comedy writer Ava Daniels (Einbinder), she’s ready to make a comeback. Can she secure her comedy legacy without getting sued…or maybe going to jail? Also, did her managers Jimmy (Paul W. Downs) and Kayla (Megan Stalter) finally hook up? You’ll have to tune into the new season of Hacks when it premieres on HBO Max on Thursday, April 9. New episodes will premiere weekly, with double episodes on April 30 and May 7; the finale of the ten-episode season will debut on May 28.
What Happened on Season 4 of ‘Hacks’?
As the season opened, Deborah finally achieved her lifelong dream of hosting a late-night talk show. Unfortunately, her victory came with some conditions, as Ava blackmailed her way on to the show’s writing staff. Despite a rocky start, the show became a hit, especially as viral video star Dance Mom (Julianne Nicholson) became a recurring guest; Deborah and Ava eventually reconciled, as well. However, her reign as late-night queen proved short-lived, as Ava was fired over her objections to the network forcing a problematic guest on the show, and Deborah quit in solidarity. Bound by a non-compete, Deborah found a loophole to continue performing; she became a mainstay at a Singapore casino, performing stand-up through an interpreter. When her obituary, which blamed her for the death of late-night talk shows, was accidentally prematurely released, she resolved to team up with Ava again to get both of their careers back on track.
In addition to the show’s leads, many of its regular and recurring players are set to return this season, including Carl Clemons-Hawkins as Deborah’s business advisor, Rose Abdoo as Deborah’s estate manager, Mark Indelicato as Deborah’s personal assistant, Kaitlin Olson as Deborah’s black-sheep daughter AJ, Jane Adams as Ava’s mother, and Lauren Weedman as Las Vegas’ fun-loving mayor.
Season 5 of Hacks will premiere on HBO Max on Thursday, April 9.
