What Is ‘A Tale of Two Cities’ About?

First published in 1859, A Tale of Two Cities follows the parallel lives of British barrister Canton and French nobleman Darnay. As the French Revolution rages across the English Channel, Dr. Manette returns from a decades-long imprisonment in the notorious Bastille prison to meet Lucie, the daughter he has never known. Canton is in love with her, but she doesn’t share his feelings; conversely, she loves Darnay, who loves her, but he is doomed by the bloodthirsty revolutionaries of the Reign of Terror, first and foremost among them the hateful Madame Defarge. To ensure that true love may prevail, a terrible sacrifice may be necessary… Considered one of Dickens’ finest works, A Tale of Two Cities has been adapted for the screen on numerous occasions; most famous is the 1935 big-screen adaptation, which starred Ronald Colman, Elizabeth Allan, and Basil Rathbone, and was nominated for Best Picture.

A Tale of Two Cities is created and written by Daniel West (Gunpowder) and directed by Richard Clark (Outlander). It also stars Sharon Duncan-Brewster (Dune), Yannick Renier (Reflection in a Dead Diamond), Roxane Duran (Interview With the Vampire), and Guillaume Gallienne (The Regime).

A Tale of Two Cities will premiere on MGM+ later this year; no release date has yet been announced.
