Javier Bardem steps into one of the most terrifying roles in screen history in the first teaser for Cape Fear. Apple TV‘s new miniseries is the third time the classic thriller has been adapted for the screen. Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson also star in the series, which will make its debut exclusively on Apple TV on June 5.
In the teaser, we get our first glimpse of Bardem as Max Cady, an ex-convict festooned with tattoos; he’s recently been paroled, but the walls of his apartment, which are festooned with news clippings about his case, suggest that he hasn’t moved past his violent history. Anna and Tom Bowden (Adams and Wilson) have moved beyond the past they share with Cady; the two affluent attorneys live a seemingly perfect life. That is, until Cady comes back into it to make all their worst nightmares come true. He’s going to get his revenge, no matter what — but what does he want revenge for, and what could the Bowdens have done to deserve this? You’ll have to let Apple beat the summer heat by running a chill down your spine…
What Is ‘Cape Fear’?
Cape Fear was adapted from the 1957 novel The Executioners, by John D. MacDonald. That novel centers around Max Cady, a recently paroled criminal who blames witness Sam Bowden for sending him to jail. It was first filmed in 1962; J. Lee Thompson directed Gregory Peck (as Bowden) and Robert Mitchum (as Cady) in a white-knuckle thriller that was patterned off the works of Alfred Hitchcock, and even featured a memorably chilling score by frequent Hitchcock collaborator Bernard Herrmann. Steven Spielberg planned to remake the film in the 1990s, but he found the script too violent; he then traded the rights to Martin Scorsese for the rights to Schindler’s List. The remake starred Nick Nolte as Bowden, Jessica Lange as his wife, Juliette Lewis as their daughter, and a never-more-unhinged Robert De Niro as Cady. The film was Scorsese‘s biggest box office success to date, and earned Oscar nominations for Lewis and De Niro.
Cape Fear was created, written, and showrun by Nick Antosca (A Friend of the Family); both Scorsese and Spielberg executive produce. In addition to Bardem, Adams, and Wilson, the series also stars CCH Pounder (Avatar), Anna Baryshnikov (Dickinson), Jamie Hector (Bosch), Margarita Levieva (Daredevil: Born Again), Lily Collias (Roofman), Joe Anders (Bonus Track), Malia Pyles (Pretty Little Liars), Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Ted Levine (Silence of the Lambs), and Patrick Fischler (Paradise).
Cape Fear premieres on Apple TV on June 5.
