‘Calamities’: Prime Video Officially Orders New Crime Series From Glen Powell!!

It’s been something of a rollercoaster few years for Glen Powell, who first truly arrived as a star with his breakout performance opposite Tom Cruise and Miles Teller in Top Gun: Maverick. Powell followed up Top Gun: Maverick with a pair of hits, Hit Man (starring Adria Arjona) and Twisters (starring Daisy Edgar-Jones), which each had separate takeovers of movie theaters and streaming. Powell experienced the first real speed bump of his career late last year with the release of The Running Man, the Stephen King-based sci-fi remake that underwhelmed at the box office. Fortunately for Powell and Paramount, the film is rewriting history on Paramount+, where it’s become the streamer’s most popular movie of the year thus far.

Powell has already starred in a new eat-the-rich thriller this year, How to Make a Killing, but he’s always on the lookout for new projects. This afternoon, Prime Video announced it has given a straight-to-streaming order to a new series, Calamities, which will be written, directed, and produced by David Weil. Powell is also one of the producers attached to the project, along with Natalie Laine Williams and David Cohen. Casting for the series is being kept under wraps for the time being, and there’s no word on whether Powell will star in the project or keep his role restricted to producing. Powell does have deep roots in the state of Texas, so it wouldn’t be all that surprising if he took it upon himself to star in the project he’s also involved in as a creative.

What Is ‘Calamities’ About?

The official synopsis for the new Texas-set crime thriller, which will be released in over 240 countries, reads as follows:

“Calamities is a gripping and propulsive Texas crime thriller like no other. After a drug deal explodes into violence, a quiet border town is thrust into a deadly collision course between a small-town sheriff looking for answers from her past, a sociopathic hit woman, an overly eager FBI agent, and a ruthless sect of the cartel.”

Prime Video’s new Calamities series is shaping up to be the perfect mixture of Sicario and Task. It promises to have all the drug-crime, neo-Western elements of the former, with the FBI investigative side of the latter. It can safely be considered one of the streamer’s most exciting projects that’s in development.
