HBO‘s Game of Thrones franchise is the apex predator of the fantasy TV world, and it’s an empire that has only expanded with other hit spin-offs like House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The television space is firmly under the franchise’s control, but there is one territory the brutal adult fantasy saga hasn’t yet conquered — movie theaters. “Conquered” is actually the opportune word here, as at CinemaCon 2026, Warner Bros. officially revealed plans for the first-ever Game of Thrones movie, with the official title of Aegon’s Conquest. Considering CinemaCon is an expo that almost exclusively caters to theatrically released features, this quietly seems to confirm that Aegon’s Conquest will be the first Game of Thrones story to hit the big screen.
Those who have flipped the pages of Martin’s Fire and Blood book, upon which House of the Dragon is based, will know that the history of Aegon I Targaryen lies between the covers. After all, there’s much more to the multitude of chapters than the story of Rhaenyra and Alicent. At the very beginning, readers learn about Aegon’s takeover of the then spread out kingdoms of Westeros to make them one. He was also the person credited for creating the Iron Throne by melting the weapons of his enemies and forging them into one giant (and in some ways murderous) chair. And, if A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was lacking in the familial romantic relationships for you, just wait until Aegon’s Conquest premieres, as the titular king was married to not just one, but two of his sisters — Visenya and Rhaenys.
The project will be penned by Beau Willimon, who TV fans will undoubtedly recognize as the showrunner behind Netflix’s political thriller House of Cards and Disney+’s critically celebrated Star Wars offshoot Andor. At this time, no casting announcements have been made, so the identities behind the first king of Westeros and his sister-wife queens are yet to be uncovered.
What Other ‘Game of Thrones’ Projects Are on the Way?
Earlier this year, fans of the Game of Thrones ever-expanding universe were treated to a truly unique and one-of-a-kind project via A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The six-episode series featured the talents of Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell and was based on George R.R. Martin’s novel Tales of Dunk and Egg. A hit with audiences and critics alike, the series was quickly renewed for a second season. And, although the follow-up to one of the greatest Game of Thrones offshoots in history may be awhile away, audiences will luckily be tied over thanks to the impending arrival of the third season of House of the Dragon, which will crank the drama, emotion, and bloodshed up to an 11 when it arrives in June.
