Today at CinemaCon, where Collider‘s Britta DeVore is reporting from the floor, Paramount just confirmed a major shift for the Star Trek franchise just weeks after cancelling one of the show’s newest and most exciting series. While their comments were brief, the studio confirmed that a new Star Trek movie is officially in development. While a fourth Star Trek film in the Chris Pine-led Kelvin-verse has been rumored for nearly a decade, it sounds like Paramount is taking the franchise in a new direction entirely.
Back in November, it was reported that Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves duo Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley had been tapped to write, direct, and produce a new original film for Star Trek. While plot details are still being kept under wraps, the new film will not be connected to the Kelvin-verse in any way and will feature an entirely new cast. How exactly the film fits into the sprawling 60-year television franchise also remains to be seen, and it’s possible the film could introduce an entirely new set of characters to the franchise as well.
This news comes after Paramount‘s new management swiftly began winding down the franchise’s television efforts. On the heels of a successful first season, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy was announced to be ending with its already-filmed second season. The decision follows previous plans to bring Strange New Worlds to an end as well, with a fifth and final season, which was filmed back-to-back with Season 4. No release date has been set at the time of writing, but Season 4 is expected to air on Paramount+ sometime later this year. Starfleet Academy has also not set a release date for its second and final season, but as filming wrapped earlier this year, it’s possible new episodes could arrive in early 2027.
What Else Do We Know About the Future of Star Trek?
Little else is known about the franchise’s future in the wake of Paramount‘s ongoing merger plans. No new television shows have been announced at this time. The previously announced sitcom from writers Tawny Newsome (Lower Decks, Starfleet Academy) and Justin Simein (The Haunted Mansion) may have fallen through the cracks of the transition, as updates on this series have been scarce. While little else is known about Goldstein and Daley‘s new movie, the duo have a proven track record together with Dungeons & Dragons holding a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes and their previous IP team-up, Spider-Man: Homecoming, sitting at 92% on the review aggregator.
