‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Sequel Is Officially Happening!!

After COVID-19, the world of cinema hung in the balance. For months, fans of the theatrical experience were unable to congregate and watch movies on the big screen alongside other cinema lovers. When theaters opened back up, the return was a slow-moving one, with ticket buyers still uncertain. But, that all changed when filmmaker Joseph Kosinski paired with the legendary Tom Cruise to give theatergoers something they’d been waiting for for the last three decades. When Top Gun: Maverick came soaring into cinemas, people paid attention, and knew they needed to get to the biggest screen imaginable to take in the sequel on the scale that it was meant for.

Today, during Paramount’s presentation at CinemaCon, those in attendance learned something incredibly exciting — a sequel to Top Gun: Maverick is officially on the way with a script in development. After Paramount and Skydance merged last summer, things looked quite promising for the Top Gun: Maverick sequel, with writer Ehren Kruger returning to pen the script. Additionally, we learned that Cruise will reprise the role that he’s been attached to since 1986 — that is to say, the famed stunt lover will officially return to the danger zone as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. But wait, there’s more! Celebrated producer and action film enthusiast Jerry Bruckheimer is also back in the saddle, which puts the threequel on track to be another box office-dominating favorite. While we may not know more at this time, we certainly hope that other favorites like Glen Powell’s Hangman and Miles Teller’s Rooster will hop back into the cockpit and crank their engines to an 11.

What We Know About ‘Top Gun 3’

Right now, it’s unclear who else might return for the third installment in what’s now become one of action’s biggest franchises. However, back in June, Kosinski teased an “ambitious” idea, telling ScreenRant:

It’s a big idea that I spent almost a year developing — working with some friends at the Navy and Lockheed. And yeah, Ehren’s into it now, so we’ll see how it comes along. It was about coming up with an idea that — again — felt like a new challenge. Something that opens up the story in a way you just can’t let go. And I think the idea is so ambitious. That’s what’s exciting to me.”

As of right now, Top Gun 3 doesn’t have a release date.
