Zoinks! Netflix has assembled Mystery Incorporated for their new live-action Scooby-Doo series. The series, now officially titled Scooby-Doo: Origins, is now in production in Atlanta, Georgia. Netflix kicked off the occasion by releasing the first image of their cast in character, minus the titular Great Dane, though the streaming giant also shared some new details about the reboot’s plot and the adorable new version of everyone’s favorite dog detective.
The new image features the gang peering around a large wooden door; from top to bottom, they are Fred Jones (Maxwell Jenkins, Reacher), Daphne Blake (McKenna Grace, Scream 7), Velma Dinkley (Abby Ryder Fortson, Ant-Man), and Shaggy Rogers (Tanner Hagen, The Pitt). And while Scooby-Doo himself isn’t in the picture, there’s an awfully large paw-print on the door. Also not pictured is Paul Walter Hauser (The Naked Gun); his role in the series has yet to be specified, so him lumbering after the gang in a monster costume can’t be ruled out. The series will detail how the gang first got together; old friends Shaggy and Daphne, spending their last summer at camp, get tangled up in a mystery surrounding a Great Dane puppy who may be the only witness to a supernatural murder. Joining forces with dorky townie Velma and weird new kid Fred, the newly formed quartet are determined to get to the bottom of it.
What Is ‘Scooby-Doo’?
After protests by parents’ groups over cartoon violence, writers Ken Ruby and Joe Spears created Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! for animation giant Hanna-Barbera in 1969. The series centered around four youths and their talking Great Dane, who traveled from town to town in their van, the Mystery Machine, solving seemingly supernatural mysteries; after various pratfalls and mishaps, Mystery Incorporated invariably unmasked the monster of the week as an unscrupulous adult in a costume. The series was a huge hit, and spawned many follow-ups, spin-offs, and reboots; some of them, like the Vincent Price-starring The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo or the serialized Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated, pitted the gang against actual supernatural menaces. The franchise hit the big screen in the 2000s in two live-action films, Scooby-Doo and Scooby-Doo: Monsters Unleashed; both were directed by Raja Gosnell (Never Been Kissed) and written by James Gunn (Superman). Several live-action TV movies followed, but Scooby-Doo: Origins will be the first-ever live-action Scooby-Doo series.
Scooby-Doo: Origins will be written, showrun, and executive produced by Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg, veterans of High Fidelity, Citadel, and Everything Sucks! Also executive producing are Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman for Berlanti Productions; André Nemec, Jeff Pinkner, and Adrienne Erickson for Midnight Radio; and Toby Haynes (Andor), who will also direct the pilot episode.
Scooby-Doo: Origins is now in production; no release date has yet been announced.
