Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun) was put through the wringer like never before with Invincible Season 4. Between his relationship with Eve (Gillian Jacobs), the return of the Sequids, a trip to Hell, a brutal rematch with Conquest (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), the beginning of the Viltrumite War with the introduction of Grand Regent Thragg (Lee Pace), and plenty of mental trauma along the way, the superhero was pushed further than ever in his efforts to protect his home and the people he loves. Even the season finale, which left the action mostly behind for a moment, was an anxiety-inducing hour ending in a decision that will forever haunt the half-Viltrumite. Alas, like Conquest, he will not be getting a chance to catch his breath.
Prime Video has confirmed, via the show’s official X account, that Invincible should be back for Season 5 next year and that all recording is complete. Moreover, it reassured that, while there’s little else to share at this point, both Thragg and Dinosaurus (Matthew Rhys), two of the best new villains adapted to the screen this season, will be back for more with the series’ return. In case anyone is still uncertain after his death was faked by Cecil (Walton Goggins) the first time, the note also adds that Conquest, indeed, has drawn his last breath. Robert Kirkman and the team have managed to keep their superhero hit on the same one-season-a-year pace since the three-year gap between Seasons 1 and 2, but there’s still so much left to adapt from his bloody and brutal comic.
Although official plot details haven’t been revealed, the Season 4 finale set the stage for a tense new chapter of Invincible. When Mark finally confronts Thragg on Earth, the big bad reveals that the Viltrumites have already begun assimilating into the human population to replenish their sparse ranks with hybrid children. As much as Mark wants to interfere, he’s in no position to do so, given how much more powerful Thragg is and how much destruction even 40 pure-blooded Viltrumites are capable of. The looming fear that the alien conquerors could harm his home at any time will linger as he continues to combat threats like Dinosaurus. Looming in space, however, is Allen (Seth Rogen), who’s suddenly been thrust into duty as leader of the Coalition of Planets following Thaedus’ (Peter Cullen) brutal death and is now in charge of deploying the upgraded Scourge virus. He’ll have to weigh whether to adhere to his mentor and potentially kill the Graysons along with the Viltrumites, or to seek another path to victory.
‘Invincible’ Season 4 Was Another Massive Success for Prime Video
Four seasons in, Invincible has shown no signs of slowing down anytime soon, both in terms of streaming success and critical acclaim. Season 4 once again earned a perfect 100% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with Collider‘s Nate Richard saying of the run in his 8/10 review, “It has all the exciting action and emotional beats you would expect while also venturing into some of the darkest territory this series has ever seen — and that’s saying something.” The series hit some painful new heights not just with its biggest action setpieces, but with its quieter moments, like Nolan’s futile conversations with his ex-wife Debbie (Sandra Oh). Expectations will once again be sky-high for the next chapter, featuring much of the same star-studded roster and showrunners Kirkman and Simon Racioppa at the helm.
Invincible Season 5 arrives in 2027. In the meantime, all episodes are now streaming on Prime Video.
