Robert De Niro‘s heading back to Netflix, and this time, it’s for a pretty grim and grisly story. The streamer dropped the first look at The Whisper Man, a thriller based on the bestselling 2019 novel by Alex North. Alongside De Niro, the movie stars Adam Scott as a crime writer whose young son is kidnapped, pulling him into a case that also involves other missing children.
That investigation becomes even more unsettling when a playground theme resurfaces, pointing back to the “Whisper Man,” a serial killer who had already been put away years earlier, and that’s where De Niro comes in, playing the writer’s dad, who just happens to be a retired police detective who originally helped stop the killer and now finds himself dragged back into the nightmare. Convenient but good for us. Michelle Monaghan also stars as the lead detective working the case, with the first-look images showing her in the middle of the investigation.
Who Else Is Involved in ‘The Whisper Man’?
The film is directed by James Ashcroft (The Rule of Jenny Pen, Coming Home in the Dark), and he is working from a screenplay by Ben Jacoby (The First Omen) and Chase Palmer (It). The film’s also the latest collaboration between Netflix and AGBO, the production company founded by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo. The Russos, who are busy with a middling indie movie by the name of Avengers: Doomsday, have already built a strong relationship with Netflix through titles like The Gray Man, The Electric State, and the Extraction franchise. AGBO is producing The Whisper Man alongside Angela Russo-Otstot and Michael Disco.
In a statement shared alongside the first-look announcement, AGBO described the film as both a thriller and a more emotional story about family.
“AGBO is excited to be embarking on our sixth film with our incredible partners at Netflix. The Whisper Man is a gripping thriller, but at its core [it] is a poignant and complex story of father and sons. We are grateful to have one of the finest actors of his generation, Robert De Niro, anchoring that story and with the remarkable James Ashcroft directing.”
The rest of the cast includes Hamish Linklater (Gen V, Midnight Mass), Owen Teague (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, It), Acston Luca Porto (Dora and the Search for Sol Dorado), and Will Brill (The Eyes of My Mother, Fellow Travelers). For De Niro, The Whisper Man continues a recent run with Netflix after Zero Day and Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman.
The Whisper Man premieres on Netflix on August 28, 2026.
