Before audiences have even seen the first season, HBO is already moving ahead with the next chapter of one of its biggest upcoming fantasy swings. That’s not exactly shocking, given the scale of the franchise involved, but it does show just how aggressively the studio is planning for the long game. After all, this isn’t the kind of story you adapt one school year at a time and hope everyone’s calendars magically line up.
Yes, folks, we hope you’re sitting down. HBO has officially renewed their upcoming Harry Potter series for a second season, adapting Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. The second season is scheduled to begin production this fall, with the series airing on HBO and streaming exclusively on HBO Max. The early renewal comes as the creative team maps out overlapping production schedules, with Season 1 set to finish before its Christmas premiere, after which the cast and crew return for the second season later in the year.
There’s also been a major behind-the-scenes update. Jon Brown, who is a writer on Season 1, has been made Hogwarts prefect, aka co-showrunner, for Season 2 alongside Francesca Gardiner. Brown’s previous credits include HBO’s Succession and The Franchise, which is a pretty strong résumé if your new job involves balancing magic, childhood wonder, and a fandom that will absolutely notice if someone puts the wrong comma in a spellbook. Brown also shared his excitement about stepping into the role, saying, “I’m incredibly excited to be collaborating with Francesca as co-showrunner. It has been a joy to write on Philosopher’s Stone, and I’d like to thank Francesca and HBO for putting their faith in me to continue this remarkable journey. Seems you’re never too old to get your invitation to Hogwarts.”
Who’s Involved With HBO’s Harry Potter?
The series is written and executive produced by Gardiner, with Mark Mylod executive producing and directing multiple episodes. Mylod’s HBO work includes Succession, which makes the creative team’s reunion with Brown a nice little bit of prestige-TV connective tissue. The series is produced for HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television.
The cast is led by Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, with John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. The wider cast also includes Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, Warwick Davis as Filius Flitwick, Sirine Saba as Pomona Sprout, Daniel Rigby as Vernon Dursley, Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley, Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, Bertie Carvel as Cornelius Fudge, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, Amos Kitson as Dudley Dursley, Gracie Cochraneas Ginny Weasley, Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, Louise Brealeyas Rolanda Hooch, Bríd Brennan as Poppy Pomfrey, Leigh Gill as Griphook, and Anton Lesser as Garrick Ollivander.
Harry Potter Season 1 will premiere at Christmas this year.
