James Marsden to star in Apple TV thriller series Disavowed

James Marsden will star in the thriller series Disavowed at Apple TV, Variety reported on May 6. The show follows legendary CIA Case Officer Brad Griffin, played by Marsden. Griffin gets abruptly fired during a global hunt for an elusive assassin.

The assassin killed Griffin’s colleague, and the disgraced officer now pursues a $15 million federal bounty. Art Marcum and Matt Holloway created the series based on their original idea. Tom Spezialy, Marsden, and Blue Marble Pictures’ Theresa Kang and Caroline Garity executive produce.

Notably, Marcum and Holloway wrote Iron Man, directed by Jon Favreau and starring Robert Downey Jr. The 2008 film grossed over $585 million at the global box office. It ultimately formed the foundation for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s massive franchise.

The writing duo also penned Uncharted, starring Mark Wahlberg and Tom Holland. Disavowed marks their first television series after years of feature film work. Apple Studios will also produce the series alongside Blue Marble Pictures.

Meanwhile, the role keeps Marsden at Apple, where he currently stars opposite Jon Hamm on season two of Your Friends and Neighbors. He received an Emmy nomination for his role in the Hulu series Paradise. He also earned Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for the Amazon series Jury Duty. On the film side, Marsden currently stars in Hulu’s Mike and Nick and Nick and Alice. He will next reprise his role as Cyclops in Avengers Doomsday. His previous television credits include Westworld, Dead to Me, and 30 Rock.

Disavowed had been in development since at least July 2025 when casting began. Marsden received the offer in September, with the greenlight taking eight additional months. Marsden is repped by CAA and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.
