Some sequels feel inevitable the second the credits roll, while others spend more than a decade revisiting the minds of fans like a time-loop fever dream. Edge of Tomorrow has been stuck in that second category for years, with everyone involved occasionally giving an update that renews hope, before the whole project goes cold for a while again. A recent wave of reports this week suggested the long-awaited follow-up to one of the best sci-fi action movies of the 2010s could finally be getting closer to cameras rolling, but the reality is a little less exciting, at least for now.
Collider‘s Steven Weintraub has learned that Edge of Tomorrow 2 is not in active development, despite recent reports. However, Warner Bros. still hopes to make the movie in the future. While the project is not officially dead, it’s not exactly alive either. The cast and director Doug Liman have all been linked to the potential follow-up over the years, but fans shouldn’t expect cameras to roll anytime soon.
The original film’s cast includes Tom Cruise (Top Gun: Maverick, Mission: Impossible — Fallout) as Major William Cage, Emily Blunt (Oppenheimer, A Quiet Place) as Rita Vrataski, Bill Paxton (Aliens, Twister) as Master Sergeant Farell, Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin, In Bruges) as General Brigham, Noah Taylor (Game of Thrones, Almost Famous) as Dr. Carter, and Jonas Armstrong (Robin Hood, The Drowning) as Skinner.
Why Is ‘Edge of Tomorrow 2’ So Desired By Fans?
The simple answer to why Edge of Tomorrow fans want a sequel is because the first movie has aged really well. Released in 2014, Edge of Tomorrow was an unreal mesh of alien invasion spectacle with a time-loop premise that let Cruise get killed over and over again until he slowly became useful. It was funny, brutal, smart, and much better than its early marketing suggested. It also gave Blunt one of her best action roles as Rita Vrataski, a battle-hardened soldier who had already lived through the nightmare before Cage even understood the rules.
The movie was not a gigantic box office smash at the time, but it became the kind of sci-fi film people kept recommending until its reputation eventually outgrew its theatrical run. That’s probably why sequel talks have never fully gone away. Cruise has cemented his reputation as the President of Movies in the decade since, and he loves to give fans what he wants, while Blunt has repeatedly said she would be open to returning if the script and timing worked.
That said, this new update is a useful reality check. Edge of Tomorrow 2 is not currently moving forward in any active way, even if Warner Bros. still wants to make it eventually. In other words, the sequel remains alive as a possibility, but not as a production gearing up right now.
