‘The Legend of Zelda’: Nintendo’s Live-Action Remake Moves Release Date Up!!

Sony‘s journey to Hyrule just got a little bit closer to embarking. In one of his trademark social media PSAs, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed that the live-action The Legend of Zelda movie has moved forward one week. Once set to premiere on May 7, 2027, it’ll now venture to theaters on April 30, marking the second date change the film has endured after previously moving back from its original March 26 date. Miyamoto emphasized that, with the shift, it’s not just arriving early, but is now firmly less than a year away from finally hitting the big screen.

The team is working hard to deliver the film to everyone as soon as possible,” Miyamoto shared in his statement on X, before thanking fans for their patience. Production wrapped on The Legend of Zelda back in April, finally ending what has been a long and winding road to capture Link and Zelda on film. Dating back to the disastrous release of Super Mario Bros. in 1993, Nintendo was reluctant for years to let one of its beloved video game franchises be adapted to another medium, even though studios had interest in bringing their sweeping fantasy adventure to life. Time and the success of Illumination‘s The Super Mario Bros. Movie helped change their tune, though, resulting in the legendary game company teaming with Sony for this new adaptation from Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes helmer Wes Ball back in 2023.

There are no details yet about what the plot will entail for The Legend of Zelda, but Sony has already shown off its Princess Zelda and Link in the form of Renegade Nell‘s Bo Bragason and The Haunting of Bly Manor‘s Benjamin Evan Ainsworth. It’s also known that T.S. Nowlin and Derek Connolly penned the script, marking one of two video game projects the former is working on after also signing up for Netflix‘s Sifu film. Most of the games center on Link and Zelda, the wielders of the Triforces of Wisdom and Courage, as they stand against the evil Ganon to protect all of Hyrule. Previously shared images of the lush green set hint that Ball’s film may take cues from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but whatever the case, the goal for Ball has been to capture the franchise’s sense of adventure.

‘The Legend of Zelda’ May Just Be the Beginning of Nintendo’s Film Plans

Nintendo‘s newfound willingness to embrace film adaptations has once again paid off in spades of late with the release of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The intergalactic sequel, based on the eponymous smash-hit 2008 video game, premiered back in April and, while not quite as successful as the first Chris Pratt-led outing, racked up a still staggering $942 million at the global box office to become the highest-grossing film of 2026 so far. After striking gold twice, the company has expressed an interest in churning out more cinematic projects at a faster pace. Notably, there have been rumblings of a yet-unrevealed follow-up to the Mario Galaxy Movie due out in 2028, but that has yet to be confirmed.

In the meantime, The Legend of Zelda will now hit theaters on April 30, 2027.
