For many, Breaking Bad remains the greatest television series ever made and rightly so. It is a title that Game of Thrones might arguably have contested for, had its final seasons been less contentious. However, one cannot deny that the George R.R. Martin-inspired series is still among the best fantasy franchises ever. Game of Thrones ended in 2019 with a divisive eighth and final season, but HBO persisted with the IP with multiple spin-off shows, including House of the Dragon (starting in 2022) and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (which began in 2026).

Both shows are prequels to the original series, and given the vast, yet detailed nature of the world of Westeros, there remain even more stories to tell. In 2022, it was reported that a Jon Snow spin-off series was in the works. No potential Game of Thrones spin-off has stirred up quite as much intrigue as the proposed Jon Snow sequel, which would follow the fan-favorite hero played by Kit Harington in the original series. Despite the buzz, in 2024, Harrington himself revealed that the sequel was no longer in active development at HBO. But just like Jon Snow himself at the end of Game of Thrones Season 5, and by the mercy of R’hllor, the Lord of Light, his spin-off series isn’t officially dead.

“It’s open knowledge that we tried to make a Jon Snow show for a little while, and just couldn’t. My main thing is not wanting to go there and do an injustice by the character,” Harrington said during a panel at Motor City Comic Con, per ScreenRant. “I think he ended well. I think that he went where he was meant to. So if you pick him up again, it needs to be for the right reasons.” Harrington admits “there was something left to say” regarding Jon Snow, conceding that a show centered solely on the White Wolf “would be interesting.” However, an inability to find the right story has forced the series to stall. But with the right story, we could see the character return. “We couldn’t find the right thing. So we put it down. For the moment. Maybe there’ll be a time…you know, he’s not dead, and that’s the amazing thing, is that he could be picked up again,” the Industry star added.

What Other Stories Might Emerge From Westeros?

It is hard to tell whether we will truly ever see a Jon Snow spin-off. While an Arya Stark-led show bringing back Maisie Williams to the iconic role was confirmed earlier this year, doubts remain about Jon’s return. Harrington‘s recent comments do end with the admission that “there’s nothing being planned at the moment.” There is an argument to be made that the final seasons of Game of Thrones botched Jon Snow’s storyline, especially along the lines of The Prince That Was Promised prophecy. The Season 8 ending for the one-time Lord of Winterfell truly leaves little room to maneuver. However, if a Jon Snow spin-off does not materialize, other options remain with Nymeria and the 10,000 Ships, The Sea Snake, focused on Corlys Velaryon and the proposed Aegon the Conqueror entry.
