Nicolas Cage is starring as a super-powered detective in his new series, Spider-Noir. Meanwhile, last year it was reported that he was set to star in the much-anticipated new season of the grittiest detective show on TV. Were those reports true? Only Cage knows for sure, and he’s finally speaking up.
In a new wide-ranging interview with Variety, Cage says that nothing is set in stone just yet when it comes to the fifth season of HBO‘s True Detective. Says Cage, “I’m not signed on to anything; we’re just talking.” He’s heard that the new season is in development, and would be “thrilled” to work with Issa López, who directed and co-wrote the fourth season and is signed to carry on with the fifth, but “nothing is concrete.” Cage was first reported to be involved with the project last year, when it was reported that he would play Henry Logan, a veteran detective investigating a crime in the Jamaica Bay neighborhood of Queens. For his part, Cage has not seen the acclaimed first season of True Detective, but has “heard great things.”
What Is ‘True Detective’?
Created by Nic Pizzolatto and directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, the first season of True Detective premiered on HBO in 2014; starring Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey as a pair of cops investigating a gruesome string of murders, the series was a huge critical hit. The second season, which featured Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams as a duo of investigators on the trail of a seemingly reformed criminal (Vince Vaughn), was not as well-received. A belated third season, which starred Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff as two detectives investigating missing children, was hailed as a return to form, while the most recent season, subtitled Night Country, was a major success; it featured Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as a mismatched pair of police officers trying to piece together a horrific crime in the Alaskan hinterlands.
Cage can currently be seen in Prime Video‘s Spider-Noir as Ben Reilly, an alternate-universe Spider-Man who works as a detective in a noir-tinged New York City. Later this year, he’ll star as legendary football coach and video game pioneer John Madden in Madden.
Season 5 of True Detective is in development; no release date has been officially announced.
