‘Scary Movie’: New Image Teases the Return of the Horror Spoof Franchise!! Check It Out!!

Horror movies look very different now than they did when the Scary Movie franchise first exploded into theaters. The genre has spent the last decade evolving into something far stranger, more psychological, and often far more self-serious than the slashers and supernatural thrillers that dominated the early 2000s. Between elevated horror, legacy sequels, prestige A24 nightmares, and increasingly elaborate franchise universes, modern horror has practically been begging for somebody to start making fun of it again.

That is exactly where Scary Movie (the sixth movie in the franchise) enters the picture. As part of Collider’s Summer Preview Event, we’re thrilled to exclusively reveal a new image from the upcoming sequel, which marks the long-awaited return of the iconic parody franchise. While plot details are still largely being kept under wraps, the movie is expected to target a new generation of horror hits, giving the series fresh material after more than a decade away from theaters.

‘Scary Movie’ Revives the Long-Running Horror Parody Franchise

The original Scary Movie became a massive hit in 2000 by skewering the horror genre of the late ’90s, particularly movies like Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and The Blair Witch Project. The franchise quickly became one of the defining comedy series of the early 2000s, eventually expanding its parody targets beyond horror. The long gap between installments may actually work in the sequel’s favor. Horror has transformed dramatically since Scary Movie 5 was released in 2013, leaving the franchise with an entirely different horror genre to satirize. Modern horror audiences are now deeply familiar with trauma-heavy psychological horror, unnerving smile-filled marketing campaigns, and increasingly serious franchise mythology, giving Scary Movie plenty of fresh material to target.

The marketing already suggests the franchise understands exactly what audiences want from a new Scary Movie. Recent posters for the film have spoofed major horror titles like Smile, Nope, Get Out, The Substance, Sinners, and Weapons. The recently released trailer also packed in references to movies like M3GAN, Terrifier, Malignant, and Final Destination Bloodlines, making it clear the sequel is aiming directly at what’s current rather than relying entirely on nostalgia.

Scary Movie slashes into theaters June 5, 2026.
