36 years after debuting to a highly positive reception, the best Christmas franchise ever is making a triumphant return this holiday season. Originally created by the late John Hughes, the Home Alone franchise comprises four feature films and two made-for-television films, with the most recent entry released in 2021 following Disney‘s acquisition of 21st Century Fox. As fans know, all the films revolve around the adventures of children who find themselves alone during the holiday season, challenged with defending their family’s house or themselves against invading burglars and criminals.
Ahead of this year’s Christmas, Disney has announced that its animated 2026 Christmas special will draw inspiration from the first Home Alone film, starring Macaulay Culkin and released on November 16, 1990. According to new reports, the full-length special is titled Mickey’s Home Alone and will see Mickey looking forward to spending Christmas at home. His plans take a turn when Minnie surprises him and the gang with tickets to spend Christmas at a world-famous Ice Palace.
Additionally, in the reimagined Home Alone project, viewers will see Mickey and Pluto are left behind and home alone in the gang’s morning rush to make it out the door. They find themselves protecting their home from two feisty villains, a raccoon and a weasel who are after their Christmas dinner, while Minnie and the gang desperately try to make their way back home. The special will debut on Disney Jr. and Disney+ during the 2026 holiday season.
What To Expect in the New ‘Home Alone’ Special
Featured in this upcoming delight are original songs “Ho-Ho-Home for Christmas” and “Favorite Christmas Feeling” by songwriter Keith Harrison Dworkin, who previously contributed to several Disney Christmas specials. There will also be a new arrangement of the holiday classic “Jingle Bells” by Emmy and Annie and Primetime Emmy-nominated composer Tony Morales.
The Home Alone-inspired special is produced by Wild Canary in association with Disney Jr. It is executive-produced by Tom Rogers and co-executive-produced by Rachel Ruderman, with Shane Prigmore as director. This comes decades after Culkin gained widespread recognition for his performance in Chris Columbus’ Home Alone as eight-year-old Kevin McCallister, who his family leaves behind as they set off to spend Christmas in Paris.
