An ‘Absolute Batman’ Animated Series is in the Works!!

It’s one of the most successful Batman books of the century, and now it’s coming to life like never before. An adaptation of one of the newest and hottest alternate takes on the Dark Knight is headed to the small screen in a new animated series; it was announced at the Warner Bros. panel at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival this morning.

Absolute Batman, the blockbuster alternate-universe series that’s sold six million copies and counting, will be adapted into a new animated series. Scott Snyder, the book’s writer, is on board as executive producer and showrunner, while the book’s artist, Nick Dragotta, will produce the series. The series pits a Batman without his wealth, power, and equipment against a fallen, corrupt world and the nightmarish villains it has spawned; the comic has been wildly successful, with the first issue going into its eleventh printing. Absolute Batman is currently in development, and no release date has yet been announced.

What Is ‘Absolute Batman’ About?

Absolute Batman takes place in the Absolute Universe, an alternate take on DC’s heroes set on an Earth corrupted and manipulated by the evil Darkseid. In that world, Bruce Wayne grew up in a working-class household in the infamous Crime Alley. After his father was killed in a mass shooting, Bruce was raised by his mother, growing up into a Reacher-sized powerhouse who’s a civil engineer by day, and a masked vigilante by night. And he’ll need that extra size to deal with the horrific versions of his classic villains he’s got to face, including a monstrous, seemingly immortal Joker, a weather-controlling Mr. Freeze, and a Bane the size of a monster truck. The Absolute line also includes takes on other classic DC characters, including Wonder Woman, Superman, Green Lantern, Flash, and Martian Manhunter, although none have met with as much success as Batman.

Absolute Batman is one of a bevy of animated Batman projects in the works. A second season of Batman: Caped Crusader, the noir-tinged series about the Masked Manhunter’s early days, will hit Prime Video this summer; the epic Knightfall saga of the 1990s is being adapted into a trilogy of animated films that are set to be released later this year; and the puppet-based film Dynamic Duo, centering around the relationship between faithful Bat-sidekicks Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, will hit the big screen in 2028.
