‘Donkey’: ‘Shrek’ Spinoff Sets 2028 Release Date!!

We are almost one year away from Shrek 5 — the first feature film installment in the beloved fantasy franchise in over 15 years (not counting the Puss in Boots spin-offs). While there was a lot of excitement at first, particularly after the truly excellent Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, the recently released trailer for the franchise’s fifth movie has drawn extremely divisive reactions from fans, with many citing the major changes in animation style. Despite this, DreamWorks and Universal are still very clearly confident in the upcoming sequel, as the franchise’s third-ever spin-off movie has officially been revealed.

Break out those waffles, cause the Shrek spin-off fans have been waiting for is officially happening. Dreamworks and Universal have officially announced that a Donkey spin-off, with Eddie Murphy reprising his role as the titular talking mule, is officially in development, following years of Murphy himself expressing interest in a standalone story following Shrek’s (Mike Myers) closest companion. The film is confirmed to be a prequel showcasing “how a donkey became Donkey,” and it even has a set release date for June 30, 2028 — exactly one year after the release of Shrek 5 in 2027.

Eddie Murphy Will Return in ‘Shrek 5’ Before the ‘Donkey’ Spin-Off

Before his origin story is revealed, Eddie Murphy‘s Donkey will return alongside Mike Myers’ Shrek and Cameron Diaz‘s Fiona in Shrek 5, 17 years after Shrek Forever After. The trio of veterans are joined by Zendaya as Shrek and Fiona’s daughter, Felicia, who is coming off of an incredible year with The Drama, The Odyssey, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and Dune: Part Three. Also joining that cast as Felicia’s two brothers are Superman‘s Skyler Gisondo and Saturday Night Live‘s Marcello Hernández.

Shrek 5 premieres in theaters on June 30, 2027, with Donkey set to premiere exactly one year later on June 30, 2028.
