‘Ghostbusters: Night Shift’: First Images Teases Netflix’s ‘Ghostbusters’ Series!! Check It Out!!

The Ghostbusters are headed back into action on Netflix, and now we know a little more about their upcoming animated series. At the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, the streamer revealed the first details about the new series, including its premise and a tantalizing sneak peek of its new ghosts and people who bust them. Ghostbusters: Night Shift will clock in on Netflix in 2027.

Ghostbusters: Night Shift is said to take place in 1994, “five years after the Ghostbusters took the Statue of Liberty for a walk” (a reference to the events of 1989’s Ghostbusters 2). The series kicks off when a scrappy band of oddballs accidentally unleashes a new paranormal menace; they will then atone for their error by becoming a new team of Ghostbusters. The premise hearkens back to Extreme Ghostbusters, a 1997 animated series that followed up on the classic 1980s The Real Ghostbusters; in it, Egon recruited a new team of college-aged Ghostbusters to combat a rising tide of spooks, specters, and apparitions. Netflix also released two new images from the series; a concept art piece of the new team, showing the silhouettes of at least five individuals, and a shot of a lone Ghosbuster battling a fearsome, fiery spirit.

Following the events of the first film, the Ghostbusters largely went their separate ways; Peter (Bill Murray) became a local TV host, Egon (Harold Ramis) went back into paranormal research, and Ray (Dan Aykroyd) opened an occult bookstore while occasionally breaking out the Ghostbusters gear for kids’ birthday parties alongside Winston (Ernie Hudson). However, they’re drawn back into action when Peter’s old flame Dana (Sigourney Weaver) once again becomes the locus for paranormal activity. This time, it’s her infant son Oscar who’s gained the attention of long-dead tyrant Vigo the Carpathian (played physically by Wilhelm von Homburg and voiced by Max von Sydow), whose spirit inhabits a painting of himself. Before long, the dead are rising, a river of psycho-reactive slime is flowing under Manhattan, and New York’s only hope may be its most enduring icon: the Statue of Liberty.

Ghostbusters: Night Shift is showrun by Elliott Kalan (The Daily Show); he will also write the series with Ben Hibon (Star Trek: Prodigy). It will be executive-produced by Hibon, Kalan, Gil Kenan, Amie Karp, and Ghostbusters veterans Jason Reitman (who directed Ghostbusters: Afterlife) and Dan Aykroyd.
