Ridley Scott has been on hiatus from the sci-fi genre since Alien: Covenant in 2018 as he’s worked primarily on big-budget historical epics, such as Napoleon (starring Joaquin Phoenix) and Gladiator II (starring Denzel Washington). Neither film was met with a warming reception, especially Napoleon, which was heavily criticized for its historical inaccuracies. Even original Gladiator star Russell Crowe went public earlier this year with a critical review of Gladiator II, saying the film failed because it lacked the same soul and moral compass of the original film. Scott will return to the world of sci-fi this August for his new release, The Dog Stars, starring Josh Brolin and Jacob Elordi. The film was previously scheduled to launch in March before being delayed to give the post-production and editing team the extra time to make sure it’s fully polished.
Scott has confirmed that he’s working on a new Western he’ll direct sometime after The Dog Stars, but news broke this afternoon of another project he’ll have a smaller hand in. Through his production banner, Scott Free, Ridley Scott will produce a new sci-fi movie, Nue, in the works from director Takashi Yamazaki, who previously directed Godzilla Minus One. Plot details about the film are being kept under wraps for now, but Amie Horiuchu will also produce alongside Keiichiro Moriya. Godzilla Minus One, which is currently streaming on Netflix, has been widely hailed as one of the best sci-fi movies of the last 10 years, and it even won the Oscar for Best Achievement in Visual Effects. What makes this win even more surprising is that the film cost only $15 million to make.
When Does ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ Come Out?
Godzilla Minus Zero, the sequel to Godzilla Minus One, will be released in theaters later this year on November 6. Toho released a first-look teaser for the film a few months ago, and the first full-length trailer for the new sci-fi movie is expected any day now. After the financial and critical success of Godzilla Minus One, Godzilla Minus Zero can safely be considered one of the biggest releases of the year. The sequel will take place in 1949, exactly two years after the events of the first film. Yamazaki is once again directing with a script he wrote.
