Ridley Scott, the king of sci-fi, is officially returning to the genre later this year for his new movie, The Dog Stars. Josh Brolin and Jacob Elordi star opposite Margaret Qualley and Benedict Wong in the film, which is scheduled to open in theaters around the world on August 28. Scott has been on a hiatus from the sci-fi genre for nearly 10 years now after he last directed Alien: Covenant in 2018. He has focused mostly on historical epics in recent years, though that hasn’t exactly worked out for him. Napoleon (starring Joaquin Phoenix) is widely regarded as one of the biggest box office bombs of Scott’s career, and while Gladiator II (starring Paul Mescal) avoided being branded a flop, it’s not remembered in anywhere near the same light as its predecessor.
Although he’s not been directing sci-fi movies and TV shows, Scott does have a steady hand in producing some of the biggest sci-fi projects of the last few years, including Alien: Earth. FX recruited Fargo creator Noah Hawley to write Alien: Earth, and the show did so well in 2025 that it was picked up for Season 2. This afternoon, FX confirmed that production is officially underway on Alien: Earth Season 2, with Jerome Flynn, Sam Spruell, and Tracey Ullman all joining the cast. Ullman is best known for her work in Curb Your Enthusiasm, while Flynn is famous for playing Bronn in Game of Thrones. Spruell also recently starred as Prince Maekar Targaryen in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and he has experience working with Hawley on Fargo in the past.
It’s a ‘Game of Thrones’ Reunion in ‘Alien: Earth’ Season 2
Jerome Flynn isn’t the only Game of Thrones star crossing over into the world of sci-fi in Alien: Earth Season 2. The first name confirmed to join the cast was long-time Game of Thrones veteran Peter Dinklage, who played Tyrion Lannister in all eight seasons of the George R.R. Martin series. Dinklage’s Tyrion and Flynn’s Bron were key figures working together throughout Game of Thrones, and fans have been waiting since the series finale in 2019 to see the duo reunite once more. It’s unlikely this reunion will come before the end of the year, but it’s a safe bet that Alien: Earth Season 2 will be released in 2027.
