‘Obsession’ Has Officially Become the Highest-Grossing Original Horror Movie of the Century!!

Horror has rarely been more popular than it is today, with some of the biggest movies of the year hailing from the devil’s favorite genre. Whether it’s a genius sequel such as 28 Years: The Bone Temple, or a viral sensation from a record-breaking 20-year-old director in A24‘s Backrooms, 2026 has already hosted several of the best horror movies in recent memory. But of these horror films, one is sure to stand as the year’s biggest, thanks in no small part to breaking seemingly countless records and earning universal praise.

Of course, we’re talking about Focus Features’ Obsession, Curry Barker‘s breakout masterpiece that has the whole world talking. Despite being released almost two months ago and having now been available on digital platforms for two weeks, Obsession is still holding strong at the box office, earning another $3.8 million in a seventh-placed domestic finish last weekend. This run will likely come to an end later this week, as the brilliantly frightening breakout debuts on streaming, available on Peacock July 17.

But despite this streaming debut looming, records continue to fall for Obsession. It has already been well documented that the movie is the first film with a sub-million production budget to earn over $200 million this century, the highest-grossing non-animated original film of the past decade, and the only genre film in history to stay in the box office top ten for over 40 days in a row. Now, courtesy of last weekend’s results, Obsession is officially the highest-grossing original horror movie of this century.

A New Horror Film Just Debuted in Theaters

As the Obsession shadow fades from theatrical presence, a new critically acclaimed horror is making its big splash. Three years after the Evil Dead franchise returned with Evil Dead Rise, Evil Dead Burn has finally debuted in theaters, with Infested director Sébastien Vaniček‘s wild ride earning just shy of $30 million in its first weekend. The film is being hailed by critics as a huge success, with Collider‘s Aidan Kelley one of many to do so in his 8/10 review. “The characters have depth, the action, scares, and comedy are all in line with Sam Raimi’s signature style, and it has a third act that is nothing short of unforgettable,” Kelley wrote, adding, “In truth, there is one word and one word only that can accurately describe Evil Dead Burn: Groovy.“
